Casting can turn a good TV show into a legend, and it would be hard to mention the success of TV shows like Firefly and Breaking Bad without highlighting the great cast. Even a mediocre idea and plot can be saved by a fantastic cast who work with the material and put their own spin on their characters, with some perfect casting decisions saving declining TV shows.

One HBO TV show that has been outshone by its cast is True Detective, which has featured some major stars like Matthew McConaughey, Jodie Foster, and Colin Farrell as well as up-and-coming actors like Erin Moriarty, who would go on to play Starlight in The Boys. Unfortunately, the series itself was patchy, but each season is worth watching.

True Detective Varied In Quality, But One Thing Stayed The Same

When True Detective first aired, the show looked set to become an instant icon among crime TV shows. The series introduced one of the best TV detectives of all time in the cynical and philosophical Rust Cohle, played by Matthew McConaughey. The partnership between Cohle and his partner Mary Hart (Woody Harrelson) worked well, and could have continued for all four seasons.

However, this is not the format that the series would take, as True Detective's four seasons are in an anthology format, with each season taking place in a different location with a new set of detectives and crimes. While there is the occasional crossover as they take place in the same universe, the theme varies wildly, with season 2 losing the original supernatural element.

This inconsistency hurt the show, with each season varying drastically in success and often feeling like they belonged to different shows altogether. While changing the cast might feel as though this contributed to the series' problems, True Detective's ever-changing lineup of characters is the factor that saved it, as its one consistent element was the excellent cast.

The best episodes of True Detective did not all belong to the first season as might be expected, as each of the seasons have excellent acting moments. The show's standout actors like Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, and Mahershala Ali made each of their seasons worth watching, even when the plot and writing shifted the show's focus from its original format.

True Detective Is A Show That Could Have Run Forever

Incorporating supernatural elements into a genre that is usually defined by a grounded and procedural approach was a major creative risk, but the success of detective TV shows like Dark Winds has proven that it can be done. True Detective proved with its first season that it had the makings of a timeless classic that broke genre boundaries.

While the series was a great detective TV show full of unpredictable twists and turns, the supernatural element and unusual characters made the first season a creative masterpiece, and if the following seasons had shared a little more in common with the first, even with a different cast of eccentric characters, it could have changed the fate of the show.

Each season of True Detective is set in a different time period, which offers practically limitless scope for the show to expand and explore locations and eras that have not often been the focus of a series. The difference between older urban legends like hauntings and newer ones like the Slenderman could have provided plenty of inspiration.

Some anthology series are unmissable TV masterpieces, and if True Detective had been more consistent while maintaining its great casting, it could have become one. The concept and approach were both exciting enough that True Detective could have run forever, and as critics enjoyed the 2024 reboot, it is possible that a revival could one day be attempted.
