As the Game of Thrones franchise continues to be popular with its prequels and spin-off shows, there is rampant speculation that another show is in the works thanks to George R.R. Martin. Last year, it was reported that Martin is interested in expanding the universe through a sequel to Game of Thrones, and in the months since, fans have speculated that the spin-off could be about Jon Snow and Arya Stark. While another Game of Thrones show would most likely find success, HBO has entered the conversation to calm fans eager for more Westeros content.
In a recent interview, HBO and HBO Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys was asked about the Game of Thrones rumors and whether a Jon Snow-Arya Stark sequel is also in the pipeline. Bloys gave a lengthy response, stating that he's aware of the franchise's strong interest. While he was vague about whether the project was real, he wants to make it clear that something that's in "development" doesn't mean it has entered production. HBO also doesn't plan to follow Marvel's model of producing too many projects at once.
"Well, since you’re asking, you know what my answer is going to be, is that we don’t really talk about development. But, one thing I will say that’s interesting. Obviously, there’s a lot of interest around the Game of Thrones universe. And one thing I noticed with the launch of The Seven Kingdoms was this idea that it was the latest Game of Thrones spin-off.
And I do like to remind people that there have been exactly two spin-offs, House of the Dragon, and then The Seven Kingdoms which launched two weeks ago. Sometimes, because of the intense interest in development, I think people get confused and believe that development means something is actually in production. So I just want to be clear about that we’ve been very, very judicious about shows that we produce. We’ll develop a lot because we want to give ourselves the best chance of finding a show that makes sense, but we have not produced all that much. This is not Marvel level, four series a year, or anything like that. So sometimes people confuse development speculation with actual shows being produced."
While a Game of Thrones sequel has yet to be officially announced, Kit Harington has stated that he has no interest in returning to Westeros after playing Jon Snow for almost a decade. Meanwhile, Emilia Clarke has revealed that she has no plans to return to the franchise either, nor does she want to star in another fantasy project after playing Daenerys Targaryen. However, Sophie Turner has expressed interest in returning to Game of Thrones, while also saying that she's satisfied with how Sansa's story ended in Season 8.
What Game of Thrones Projects Are in the Works So Far?
Fortunately for Game of Thrones fans, Westeros is still just a screen away, as the franchise continues to produce prequels of the hit TV series. House of the Dragon is still ongoing, as Season 3 is currently in post-production, and writing for the fourth and final season has already begun. Season 3's release date has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, HBO is currently airing its latest spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is based on The Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. As the show reaches its midway point, it was announced that Episode 4's release schedule has changed due to the Super Bowl. Additionally, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is currently in production.
The Game of Thrones franchise is available to stream on HBO Max. New episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms air every Sunday. Follow Collider to stay up to date with the latest updates.
