The acclaimed producer, screenwriter, and director Bill Lawrence is having quite the moment. Not only is his acclaimed comedy series Shrinking in the midst of a third season, but his beloved soccer series Ted Lasso is about to return for a fourth installment, and a risky revival of the hit sitcom Scrubs has turned into instant success. If that wasn't enough, the Spin City co-creator has just dropped yet another series that looks destined to prove a lasting hit in the form of Rooster.

Starring the Oscar-nominated national treasure Steve Carell, Rooster follows an author's complicated relationship with his daughter, who is played by Charly Clive. The series debuted on March 8 and is already proving a triumph, winning an initial near-perfect score from critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, which has now settled on an impressive 87%. The series features a strong ensemble cast alongside Carrell, including Connie Britton, John C. McGinley, Rory Scovel, Danielle Deadwyler, and more. Lawrence co-created Rooset alongside Matt Tarses, with Carrell joining the pair and others as executive producers.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the series, boosted by strong reviews, has become an instant hit. At the time of writing, Rooster is one of the ten most-streamed shows on HBO Max in the U.S. Entering the charts at #3, only two shows stand between Rooster and the streaming summit. In second place, the hugely popular medical drama The Pitt continues its dominance, although it has recently been knocked from the top spot by the star-studded new series DTF St. Louis.

Among the many critics gushing over Rooster is Collider's Tania Hussain, who awarded the new series a near-perfect 9/10 in her recent review. "Rooster's successful balancing act between big laughs, small emotional landmines, and relationships is exactly why Lawrence comedies hit the way they do," Hussain wrote, adding, "Earning so much of its laughter and heart through the time you spend on campus with these characters, the HBO series never just relies on its charm and one-liners. As a show that keeps getting better as it goes and an ensemble that is nailing every scene, Rooster belongs at the top of your must-watch list this season."

Rooster is streaming on HBO Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more of the latest streaming stories.
