On X, fans are reacting to the trailer and inevitably comparing it to the beloved movies starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Framesofnick laments how the "Harry Potter series and Moana live action competing for most pointless/sauceless remake this year." A trailer for Disney's live-action Moana remake was also released this week and was widely criticized for its visuals and the depiction of Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui.
Amouteruhs is just as unimpressed by the Harry Potter trailer, explaining that "what's the point in a reboot if you're bringing nothing new to the table.. this looks like a bland version of the movies." Miguelaraizac appreciates the "perfect casting for the kids" but also feels "a new adaptation is completely unnecessary after those great movies. I didn't see anything new or creative here that justifies its existence (besides the huge amount of money it'll make). We'll see if that changes." HCF_m2h is most concerned by the visuals and argues that "A 2001 Harry Potter movie has visuals that look better than this."
On the more positive side, CinemaHub declares that "We all, as Potterheads who grew up watching the Harry Potter movies, will be watching this series." This point is further emphasized with the iconic Miranda Cosgrove meme alongside pictures of the leading trio for the Harry Potter movies and show. SchwayJohn is excited by the trailer and the series kicking off in December, noting that "Doomsday, Dune and this is gonna make for a helluva December." Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are both coming to theaters on December 18.
For some other fans, the trailer has taken them by surprise and piqued their interest after being initially skeptical. Glindaupland admits, "wait, this actually looks pretty good. i’m shocked." The footage has made ViewerAnon more curious to see the adaptation, since it is "Kinda fascinating seeing a filmed version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone that's jumped to the darker more 'realistic' Prisoner of Azkaban aesthetic."
The HBO series has been touted as a more faithful adaptation of the Harry Potter books, as one season per novel provides more room to explore certain characters and storylines that had to be cut from the films. Many of the reactions to the trailer are not as focused on faithfulness to the source material, though, and instead revolve around how the show compares to the movies, and whether the new adaptation is bringing anything new that audiences haven't already seen before.
The cast of HBO's Harry Potter show, especially for the younger characters, seems to be one of the better-received areas so far, including TheJ4yMan posting a closeup of McLaughlin and acknowledging that "he actually kinda looks like daniel radcliffe." It was reported in 2024 that over 32,000 children auditioned for the lead roles, an important decision for HBO to make given the plan to make seven seasons, one for each of the books.
In addition to McLaughlin, Stout, and Stanton, HBO's Harry Potter cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander. Warwick Davis is reprising the role of Professor Filius Flitwick from the movies, and no one has been announced yet to be playing Voldemort.
