Fans were given a new glimpse of Halo: Campaign Evolved during yesterday's Xbox Games Showcase. The game, which serves as a marker for the series' 25th anniversary this year, was also given a release date and new missions trailer. The new missions are meant to not only add some new content into the original Halo's story, but are also there to give additional context. Overall, it sounds pretty cool.
What isn't so cool, depending on which fans you ask, are the new Master Chief suits that are part of Halo: Campaign Evolved's Premium and Collector's Editions. The suits in question are part of the Alpha Halo Armory Pack, which gives you five brand-new skins for Master Chief. Pics of the suits have started to circulate on social media, including a post by grunt.api on X. And, for the most part, fans weren't exactly pleased.
Mostly, people seem to take issue with how the new suits redesign Master Chief. A few users called it "soulless" and others were turned off by the live service pitfalls that are often associated with in-game items like skins. It hasn't helped that collabs with companies for free in-game items is already a thing, and the game isn't even out yet.
"The game isn’t even out, and they’re already shilling out with crazy skins. I can’t imagine how bad the full game is gonna be," reads a comment from LIL DRAGO.
"Those skins look absolutely terrible," wrote a user named Jackal under the post on X.
"Genuinely why are there paid skins for a first-person single player game?" questioned a user named alan baked.
"I am legitimately, viscerally, enraged at how lazy, money grabbing, and soulless this all looks," wrote Steven James Stinson. "Naturally it will sell like hot cakes."
Of course, not everyone was angry about the Alpha Halo Armory Pack. Quite a few comments under the post on X included folks who had already preordered editions of the game in order to get the in-game goodies. "Already got! GOD WE ARE EATING SO GOOD," wrote a user named Kidskull.
"The hunter skin kinda cool tho," wrote yourmomjay.
At best, the new skins for Halo: Campaign Evolved are already proving to be controversial. Still, almost everyone seems to agree that $50 for the Standard Edition is pretty sweet, and if you despise the new looks for Master Chief, then you won't get the packs with that edition.
