After successfully reuniting with his old collaborator, director Guy Ritchie, on the action-thriller film Wrath of Man a few years ago, Jason Statham has now delivered one of the biggest box office bombs of his career. The film Shelter, which was released in late January to surprisingly solid reviews, is nowhere near recouping its reported $50 million budget. It has disrupted a success streak for Statham, who had headlined the action hits The Beekeeper and A Working Man in the last couple of years. Both those movies made more in their domestic debuts than Shelter has made so far. Shelter is Statham's lowest-grossing film since his most recent collaboration with Ritchie, which made roughly twice as much worldwide.
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who directed another box office bomb — Gerard Butler's sci-fi sequel Greenland 2: Migration — only last month, Shelter also features Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, and Daniel Mays. The movie holds a 62% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Classing up an overdone premise with professional execution, Shelter is highly derivative of previous Jason Statham action vehicles but lean and mean enough to forgive the recycled tropes." The film's 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes bodes well for its future on the PVOD market, where movies with high audience ratings tend to gain traction.
Here's the Guy Ritchie Movie that 'Shelter' Is Still Trailing
Shelter was produced on a reported budget of $50 million, but it has so far grossed only around $26 million worldwide. By comparison, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre concluded its global run with $49 million in 2023, also against a $50 million budget. Operation Fortune was released on the Prime Video streaming service in several international markets, and featured a host of stars in its ensemble, including Hugh Grant, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, and Cary Elwes. The movie earned mixed reviews, and is now sitting at a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Statham and Ritchie started out together with the cult classic crime comedies Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. You can watch Operation Fortune at home, and Shelter in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
