The legendary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has let the world know that Andy Weir's new sci-fi movie is worth a watch, and Project Hail Mary seems truly out of this world.

Del Toro, known for Pan's Labyrinth and Frankenstein, has a career spanning decades and is best known for his fantasy retellings that blend horror and gothic romance, often featuring mind-blowing practical effects. The director has praised a few films lately, including James Gunn's Superman, No Other Choice, and Something in the Dirt.

Filmmaker del Toro took to X to reveal his thoughts about the new sci-fi Project Hail Mary, which stars Ryan Gosling in an adaptation of Weir's novel, transformed into an action-packed adventure. Del Toro shared a rather gushing review of the movie and stated, "LOVED this movie! Emotional and beautiful — with fantastic performances and tremendous directorial control!"

Project Hail Mary, based on Weir's novel, stars Gosling, Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung, and Lionel Boyce. The movie follows Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher, who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he's there. As his memory returns, he discovers that he must help save the world from a mysterious substance that's causing the sun to die. However, Ryland may have some help from an alien friend.

First reactions to Weir's sci-fi have been glowing, with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley stating that "Imagination unleashed even better than I pictured it on the page. How Gosling captivates throughout a largely one-man show is beyond me — your earliest Best Actor contender. & my sweet prince Rocky… tears flowed all third act. What a beautiful display of companionship." Award talk is certainly on the horizon, and fans are eagerly awaiting a chance to see the epic themselves.

Gosling, known for The Notebook, La La Land, and Drive, is set to star in two other projects alongside Project Hail Mary, including Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter and Tough Guys. The actor hasn't yet won an Oscar, but has been nominated for three throughout his career, so perhaps the upcoming sci-fi can finally get Gosling to take home the award.

Project Hail Mary will crash-land into theaters on March 20.
