A new chapter inMarvel Comics is officially here with the launch of Imperial Guardians #1, a series that was released on March 11, 2026. The series follows the events of the Imperial storyline, introducing a new, powerful strike team to protect the new Galactic Union.
Written by Dan Abnett with art by Marcelo Ferreira, the central team consists of Gamora, Captain Marvel, Amadeus Cho, Darkhawk, and Cosmic Ghost Rider. As they track down a rogue Kree Admiral, the team discovers that the Admiral actually has something far worse planned than any of them could have expected.
Imperial Guardians #1 Opens a New Era for Marvel
To expand on the storyline, the Imperial Guardians follow the events of the Imperial storyline, in which major civilizations are bound together under the newly formed Galactic Union, a fragile order upheld mainly through secrets, lies, and covert manipulations. The central mastermind behind this alliance is Maximus the Mad, who recruits the Imperial Guardians as his deniable operatives.
They are tasked with handling threats that could potentially unravel the Union. The team operates from the shadows, often forced to make extreme and morally ambiguous decisions that would otherwise be unthinkable for Marvel’s traditional heroes. Only a couple of days after its debut, fans are already drawn to the new story.
In a major disappointment for Marvel fans, the shocking new Guardians of the Galaxy team has been cut short, months before their series even began.
The team itself is designed to be dysfunctional, adding to the story’s grit and high-stakes tension. Captain Marvel and Gamora bring leadership and tactical expertise to the table; Amadeus Cho delivers unmatched strength; Darkhawk adds prophetic insights; and Cosmic Ghost Rider stands out as an unreliable, psychopathic wild card.
From the very first pages of the issue, it’s clear that the team is redefining what a Marvel Cosmic squad can look like. While only slated for a five-issue limited series, the team’s individual methods, allegiances, strengths, and limitations seem to be gearing up to be thrilling and unpredictable. However, there’s one character who stands out for a shockingly unique ability.
Cosmic Ghost Rider Reveals His Most Disturbing Power Yet
Imperial Guardians New Marvel Comics Team Roster
Among the Imperial Guardians, Cosmic Ghost Rider quickly proves himself to be the team’s most unpredictable asset. While the character’s reputation for extreme violence is well established, the first issue of Imperial Guardians reveals a power that makes his brutal tendencies even more unsettling.
He eliminated them both, then brought them back to life, proving himself capable of doing such a thing on a whim.
Three weeks prior to the present events in the comic, Gamora and Darkhawk had confronted Maximus for killing them, when it was revealed that it was actually the work of Cosmic Ghost Rider. He eliminated them both, then brought them back to life, proving himself capable of doing such a thing on a whim.
The only caveat is that Cosmic Ghost Rider can resurrect only people he himself killed. This ability immediately stands out in Imperial Guardians #1, setting him apart from the rest of the team by turning the act of killing into a strategic tool that can mitigate the consequences of death by making it temporary.
However, for the Imperial Guardians, the implications of this superpower may just prove to be potentially catastrophic. When Gamora and Darkhawk were killed, it may have been from Cosmic Ghost Rider’s hand, but it was done under the order of Maximus. This added tension between the team, especially as Gamora and Captain Marvel agreed on their distrust of Maximus.
