Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.
Most GTA fans have likely accepted that they'll have to pay full price for Grand Theft Auto 6, but there's actually a potent way to avoid it this week. While the game didn't end up being $100 like some fans feared, the Ultimate Edition is, and it includes a hefty dose of extra content that makes it seem like the definitive way to play.
Luckily, many PlayStation owners will be able to avoid actually paying $100 for the Ultimate Edition. The deal will require slightly more work than just hopping on the PlayStation Store and clicking download, but at the moment, it's definitely the best way to get the Ultimate Edition for less.
Right now, Costco is selling four $25 PlayStation gift cards for $79.99, thanks to an additional $10 savings that will be available until October 11. Unfortunately, as is Costco tradition, the promotion is only available to those with a store membership. A bundle of two $75 gift cards is also available with an additional $15 off promotion.
The $25 gift cards are delivered digitally via e-mail, which should make the process of using them to buy Grand Theft Auto 6 relatively quick and painless. Applying them will make the effective price of GTA 6's Ultimate Edition $79.99, although that certainly isn't the only option. Using them to purchase the standard edition will leave $20 on the table for later use, while going for other blockbuster games at full price should leave $30-40 extra.
If you have a Costco membership, a PlayStation, and a plan to play GTA 6, there's no good reason to buy it any other way, as it's hard to imagine any other pre-launch discount beating this one. If you don't have a membership, it might be worth checking with a family member or trusted friend to see if you can work something out. Notably, though, there's a limit of two gift card bundles per member, limiting the potential for sharing.
For reference, a Gold Star Costco membership costs $65 a year, while an Executive membership with additional perks costs $130. New members receive a $20 Costco gift card when signing up for a Gold Star account and $40 when opting for Executive. It doesn't make much sense to sign up for the PlayStation deal alone, but if you were already thinking about it, now might be the time.
If the earnest adventure of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time appeals to you more than Rockstar's M-rated extravaganza, Costco is offering an identical promotion on Nintendo eShop cards, along with deals on Fortnite and Roblox gift cards. Unfortunately, Costco recently stopped carrying Xbox consoles and offers no Xbox gift cards, so the Grand Theft Auto 6 deal is exclusive to the PlayStation side of the spectrum.
