Despite Grand Theft Auto: London, which was released way back in 1999, every Grand Theft Auto entry, including the 3D and HD titles, has been set in fictionalized versions of iconic American cities. From Liberty City taking inspiration from New York, Los Santos based on Los Angeles, and the upcoming Leonida bringing a fictionalized Florida to the table, Rockstar Games have had a clear vision when it comes to the beloved franchise.
Now, despite Grand Theft Auto VI still not expected to launch until 19 November 2026, one ex-Rockstar employee has revealed where Grand Theft Auto 7 will take place, and the news will probably come as a surprise to absolutely nobody. However, it does show that Rockstar still has plans for a timeline beyond the highly anticipated GTA VI.
We Got GTA 7's Setting Before GTA 6
With two delays under its belt and a third trailer nowhere to be seen, Grand Theft Auto VI feels as unobtainable as ever. However, with just a few months to go until it is set to launch, we are in the home stretch (hopefully). In the meantime, ex-Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij, who worked at the studio for 14 years and worked on projects such as Vice City, San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto V, has recently spoken about the future of the franchise and where Grand Theft Auto VII could take us.
Speaking to GamesHub, Vermeij was asked whether a future Grand Theft Auto installment would ever take place in Europe again. "It's just not realistic," he said. "I would love it and if games still took a year to make, then yeah sure, you can have a little fun, but you're not going to get that when there's a GTA every 12 years.
"You're not going to set it in a new location," he continued. "You don't really need to either, because technology changes so much. Nobody is going to say that they're not going to play GTA 6 because they've already played Vice City. That doesn't make sense. It's completely different. They'll revisit New York again. They'll go back to LA or maybe Las Vegas. I'm afraid we're stuck in this loop of about five American cities. Let's just get used to it."
Will There Even Be A GTA 7?
Rockstar GamesAt the time of writing, a potential Grand Theft Auto VII has not been confirmed, or even mentioned, by Rockstar itself and, quite frankly, it is doubtful it will be for many years to come. With Grand Theft Auto VI expected to launch in eight months, we can then expect plenty of support for both the base game and its Grand Theft Auto Online component, that of which could go on for many years. Additionally, with fans waiting well over a decade since the last entry, Grand Theft Auto V, the same could be said for Grand Theft Auto VII. However, with the franchise being as beloved as it is, it is bound to continue, but if that will be in our lifetime, remains to be seen.
