EXCLUSIVE: The planned nationwide anti-ICE protests are reaching Hollywood. ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy will go dark tomorrow, Jan. 30, sources tell Deadline. Production on the venerable medical drama is being shut down for the day amid a call for a national shutdown by University of Minnesota student groups that has been getting fast-growing support across the country.
According to sources, the decision to suspend production Friday was made after production learned that crew members working on the Shondaland/20th Television show were not going to show up. Filming will resume Saturday, I hear.
There is currently no information about other Hollywood productions that will be impacted tomorrow. If and when such information becomes available, we will update the story.
UMN’s Somali Student Association and Black Student Union are among the organizers of the “National Shutdown,” which follows the killing of Minneapolis protestors Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents as the city has become ground zero of anti-ICE resistance.
“The people of the Twin Cities have shown the way for the whole country – to stop ICE’s reign of terror, we need to SHUT IT DOWN,” the organizers’ Web site reads. “On Friday, January 30, join a nationwide day of no school, no work and no shopping. Vote NO to ICE funding.”
Information about the initiative quickly spread on social media, shared by celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Pedro Pascal.
Among the institutions in Los Angeles that will be closed Friday is the Museum of Contemporary Art.
“This decision is made in recognition of calls for a nationwide pause and with consideration for how scheduled demonstrations in Downtown Los Angeles may affect access for our staff and visitors,” MOCA wrote on IG.
There have been nation-wide anti-ICE protests this week. They are expected to culminate on Saturday, an “ICE Out of Everywhere National Day of Action” organized by 50501.
