“Green Lens Award” Launching At SXSW To Honor Film & TV Projects Addressing Sustainability & Climate Change

EXCLUSIVE: The Sustainable Entertainment Alliance and SXSW Film & TV Festival are launching the Green Lens Award.

The ‘SXSW Green Lens Award’ will go to the film or TV project that best reflects our changing world, the human experience of living through climate change, or pathways to a more sustainable future. The jury will look for projects that spotlight these themes—whether through an overarching narrative, a storyline, or even the journey of an individual character. A special committee has been assembled by SEA and SXSW comprising industry executives and climate storytelling experts to judge the awards.

An SEA and Hollywood Climate Summit-hosted event at SXSW will celebrate the launch of the award, with the winner then announced at the Festival’s Film & TV Awards Ceremony on March 18.

“SXSW has a long history of programming that explores sustainability, conservation, and climate innovation, and the ideas shaping more resilient cities and communities,” said Claudette Godfrey, VP of Film & TV at SXSW. “With the Green Lens Award, we’re excited to extend that spirit into our Film & TV Awards by recognizing storytellers whose work brings these themes to life and shows how powerful narrative can be in shaping both culture and the future of our planet.”

The SEA (formerly the Sustainable Production Alliance) is a consortium that includes the likes of A24, Amazon MGM, Fox, Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount Sony, WBD and Netflix. It works on sustainability initiatives and reducing the carbon footprint of the entertainment industry.

“The best stories have always reflected the world as we actually experience it, and right now that means grappling with a changing climate,” added Sam Read, Executive Director, Sustainable Entertainment Alliance.

“Audiences are hungry for stories that reflect that reality, and storytellers have an incredible opportunity to meet them there. We’re thrilled to partner with SXSW to recognize the filmmakers and creators who are seizing that opportunity and turning one of the defining issues of our time into work that truly resonates.”
