2025 Golden Globes: Eddie Redmayne Admits the Surprising Reason Behind His Suit Selection

Eddie Redmayne does not have the eye for fashion.

At the 2025 Golden Globes, the Day of the Jackal star—who is up for Best Actor in a Television series alongside Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s Donald Glover, Presumed Innocent’s Jake Gyllenhaal, Slow Horses Gary Oldman, Shogun’s Hiroyuki Sanada and Landman’s Billy Bob Thornton—stepped out in a black and white checkered suit, and took time to explain why on the red carpet. (See every winner so far here.)

“I’m colorblind, which is why I’m wearing black and white tonight,” he exclusively told Zuri Hall on Live From E!: Golden Globes. “When I wear color it can be a bit risque.”

Of course, when the 82nd Golden Globes nominee—whose show is also up for Best Television Series at the ceremony, hosted by Nikki Glaser—does want to incorporate color, he enlists the help of his wife Hannah Bagshawe—with whom he shares kids Iris, 8, and Luke, 6.

“That’s when my wife has to give me some counsel,” he noted of adding color. “She’s like, ‘That doesn’t work.’"

And while his condition allows for some relationship bonding, the way the Fantastic Beasts alum discovered he was colorblind was anything but romantic.

“I learned I was colorblind because I was painting,” he recalled. “I enjoyed painting when I was a kid and I was painting these clouds and I thought they were quite gray and I was told they looked like green excrement. So, that’s how I found out I was colorblind. Traumatic. Now, here I am wearing black and white suits.” (See here for every star’s Golden Globes red carpet look).

Styling will certainly not be in the 43-year-old’s future, but a Golden Globe trophy very well could be. After all, Eddie also shared his personal connection to the original The Day of the Jackal 1973 film.

“It was my dad’s favorite movie,” he added to E! “It was a film I started watching when i was far too young. And I love it. It’s this film that has a slightly old school analogue quality to it but it’s so compelling. It’s been thrilling.”

As Eddie added of his own depiction in the series, “I’ve never done espionage and this was my attempt to do it.”

Obviously, Eddie’s attempt was a total success, and so was his and Hannah's red carpet moment. Keep reading for more couples at the 2025 Golden Globes.
