Titan X has been sent back into Axis Mundi, but that's not the end of Monarch's problems. Kentaro Randa and Isabel Simmons got away, and even though they failed to eliminate Kong and secure control over the Skull Island rift, they still intend to use Axis Mundi to manipulate the past. As for what they'll try next, the closing scene of the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 finale revealed it will pertain to Rodan, a Titan the Monsterverse hasn't featured since King of the Monsters in 2019.
Kurt Russell's Lee Shaw arrived in Thialand, where he was led to a volcano being occupied by Rodan. Evidently, Rodan - much like Titan X before him - will be the focus of the next storyline. From the looks of things, Monarch will need to stop whatever Kentaro and Isabel have planned in Thailand. As for what that may entail, it could very well lend the series an opportunity to use a concept once planned for Rodan's Monsterverse debut.
Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Was Going To Introduce A Rodan Temple
According to Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty, there was originally going to be a sequence set inside the Isla de Mara volcano in Mexico where Rodan lived. It was going to showcase a Mayan temple devoted to Rodan that was somehow constructed within the volcano. Outpost 56, the Monarch station set up to monitor Rodan, was built around the temple.
A temple inside a volcano could have created some interesting visuals for the film, but the concept didn't make it into the final film, and it never showed Outpost 56 either - although it did confirm its existence within the Monsterverse. But concept art of Rodan's temple has been shown.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Could Reveal A Different Rodan Temple In Thailand
With Monarch: Legacy of Monsters previewing a different volcano for Rodan to nest in, the Mayan temple is unlikely to ever appear onscreen, but that's not to say the underlying premise can't be explored. After all, the show has already provided itself with a good reason to venture inside the volcano. Kentaro and Isabel's search for an Axis Mundi rift has seemingly brought them to Rodan's home, so it makes sense that they'll need to enter the volcano at some point in the story.
Utilizing the temple idea, but reworking it to fit into the mythology of the region in question, would give the series a fun opportunity to further flesh out Rodan's Monsterverse history, his connection to humanity, and perhaps his relationships with other Titans, all by showing the human characters looking at ancient murals and architecture, not unlike what King of the Monsters did with Godzilla's underwater city. It may also shed light on the notion of this monster possibly being a second Rodan.
It's not hard to imagine a storyline where both Isabel's group and the Monarch team traverse through the halls of a temple built to honor Rodan, learning about his past while also racing to reach the Axis Mundi rift first. Along the way, all sorts of interesting details about Rodan could be revealed. Godzilla: King of the Monsters ultimately didn't have room for that level of attention on Rodan's story, but with a full season available to the Apple TV series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is in a good position to really build on Rodan's place in the wider lore of the Monsterverse.
