Godzilla returns, much to the displeasure of the citizens of kaiju-ravaged, post-World War II Tokyo, in Godzilla Minus Zero later this year. The sequel to 2023's Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One will continue the story of the survivors of the first film and see the Shikishima family contend with a new threat.

On Thursday, Toho and distributor GKIDS released a new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, as well as new details on Takashi Yamazaki’s upcoming movie. The short trailer hints that, amid Godzilla's return, disaster-response officials are considering the most extreme measures to push the King of All Monsters away from Japan, including using thermonuclear weapons. "Another moral boundary mankind should not cross," one character says, apparently in response to that plan. After a dramatic bomb-dropping scene, an angry Godzilla appears to agree.

New to the sequel is actor Min Tanaka (Perfect Days, 47 Ronin), who will portray Kanji Murakami, "a biologist carrying deep psychological scars from the war." Tanaka joins returning cast members Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima, the hero of Godzilla Minus One, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Shikishima, and Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, who fought alongside Koichi in One and who now serves as director of Tokyo's Disaster Response Bureau. Also returning are actors Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Ando, and Mio Tanaka.

Here's Toho and GKIDS' official synopsis of the film:

War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life.

Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant.

There is no third time. Everything ends here.

The first teaser trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, released back in April, showed the King of the Monsters in a larger, more menacing form stomping his way beyond the shores of Japan and toward New York City. In the final shot of that trailer, Godzilla passes by the Statue of Liberty, signaling the monster's return to the city that never sleeps — his first appearance there since 1998’s Godzilla. The kaiju likely won’t be welcomed back with open arms.

Godzilla Minus Zero sees Oscar-winning filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki return as director, screenwriter, and visual effects lead. The film opens on Nov. 3 in Japan, and on Nov. 6 in North America. Godzilla Minus Zero was filmed in Japan as the first-ever Japanese production to be filmed for IMAX using high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX.
