Takashi Yamazaki's next big project just took a major step forward.

The Godzilla Minus One director is officially heading into blockbuster territory with Grandgear, his first English-language movie, and now we finally know when it's arriving. Sony Pictures confirmed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Monday that Grandgear will hit theaters on February 18, 2028, with production set to begin soon.

Even more exciting is the first footage tease, which hints at something massive in scale. Attendees were shown flashing images of Transformer-esque robots battling in a city street, before the film's logo was plastered across the screen. While the teaser doesn’t reveal much, it shows Yamazaki bringing his grounded style to a big mech-focused story. Details on the film's cast and full plot are still being kept under wraps, but the early footage already points to it being a full-blown sci-fi spectacle.

The project has been surrounded by buzz ever since it sparked a bidding war in late 2024, eventually landing at Sony. It also marks a major collaboration with J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, which will be producing alongside Glen Zipper.

For Yamazaki, Grandgear comes after a historic run with Godzilla Minus One, which became a global breakout hit, earning over $113 million worldwide on a modest $15 million budget and winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects — a first for the long-running Godzilla franchise. The film also set a new benchmark as the highest-grossing Japanese movie in North America.

With Grandgear, Yamazaki is both writing and directing, making this his most high-profile international project yet. And based on that early footage alone, it's clear he's going bigger than ever.
