God of War fans rejoice: Kratos has officially returned, and it looks like he's going back to his roots. Last time we saw him in God of War Ragnarök he was a changed man, but the Ghost of Sparta is back to his vengeful old self in a brand-new collection that combines the original three God of War games.
This is, perhaps, one of gaming's worst-kept secrets. A new God of War collection has been rumored for a while now, and as much as we love the man Kratos has become, there's a certain joy in seeing that this brand-new game is taking him back to the version of the character we first fell in love with all those years ago.
God of War Is Going Back To Basics
No complaints here
The new (old) trilogy seems to be a full-on remake, with Sony Santa Monica Studio at the helm. It's early in development, but this is a retelling of where Kratos first began his journey. The original God of War trilogy remains one of gaming's greatest sagas, so it's great to know we're finally going back to it, presumably with a few new bells and whistles. We don't yet know exactly how much of a remake this will be, but the fact we're being told it's early days for the project certainly implies it's more ambitious than a straight-up remaster with just a few visual upgrades.
Here's what PlayStation had to say:
"This project is still very early in development, so we ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared. When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one! "
A God Of War Prequel Is Also Available Now
In a massive surprise, a God of War prequel has also just been stealth dropped. God of War: Ghost of Sparta is officially available now, and is a brand-new spinoff/prequel set before the original games.
Developed by Mega Cat Studios, this is a 2D action platformer with a canon story set in Kratos’ youth during his harsh training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos.
"God of War’s kinetic combat has found a home in a brand-new genre. Kratos will learn deadly skills using his spear and shield, as well as harness powerful divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus to take on a wide array of foes. Sons of Sparta features the return of iconic classics recreated in 2D with stunning hand-drawn pixel animation, as well as a host of new creatures to the franchise inspired by the rich, untapped facets of Greek mythology brought to life by the retro experts at Mega Cat Studios."
Clearly, this is a very good time to be a God of War fan.
