I can't stress how much Steam has delivered when it comes to free games, especially this year. There are projects rolling out daily that offer up demos, full games, and free-to-play experiences, with many of them exceeding the bar on quality.

It's particularly a haven for RPGs. Take Blades of Fire, for instance, from MercurySteam, which is free to try now and is set to debut on May 14. There's a ton of variety on offer throughout myriad settings, and there's no shortage of fantasy projects in the works.

On Steam, you can try out a brand-new game for free, which looks like it could be a pretty big win for RPG fans, especially if you're into grimdark locations. One part God of War and one part Diablo, this one has a lot of potential.

Gods, Death & Reapers Mountain Top

With a "planned release date" of 2026, Gods, Death & Reapers is live on Steam now, and you can sign up to take part in free playtesting sessions. Here's a breakdown of what to expect when you try it out: "An innovative ExtrAction RPG set in an afterlife where mythology is real and the gods are dead. Fight through PvPvE, Story Mode, or Co-Op PvE to claim valuable loot and bring balance to the shattered realms."

Three different ways to engage with the game sounds incredibly ambitious, but also welcome, since it seems fully playable both with friends and solo. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world, you'll be recruited by Death himself and stomp through mythic realms, the first stop of which is Norse mythology. A base upgrade system is promised, as well as loot and "high stakes," where if you die you lose everything, lest you extract and keep that loot.

Future updates include more content, such as maps, player trading, and additional modes. Co-op is apparently coming in a "later update" and won't be part of the playtest, but PvPvE will. The team explains that this build was crafted with "players in mind," and is "committed to community-driven feedback."

Gods, Death & Reapers Battleground

If you act fast, you should be able to get a spot in the playtest before things kick off. Even if you aren't participating right now, it could be worth staking a claim and getting in when the co-op update hits. That's what interests me the most, so I think I'm going to wait a beat and join in then.

There's no shortage of dungeon crawlers, but this ambitious game seems like a perfect fit for Steam. With the ability to update the community directly on the Steam page, this player-driven game could soar to new heights.
