Since its reboot back in 2018, the God of War franchise has garnered a whole new legion of fans. With God of War and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, both releasing to critical acclaim, fans are eager to see what is next for the new generation of Santa Monica Studio games. Now, with a live-action television adaptation on the way as well as a spin-off game, the action-adventure series is back in the spotlight, so now could be the perfect time for Santa Monica to unveil the next major entry.

God Of War Nearly Went To Egypt Before

When the God of War franchise was first unveiled back in the early 2000s, the original trilogy saw our favorite Spartan warrior head to Ancient Greece as he battled against some of mythology's most formidable beings. However, in the reboot, Santa Monica took us to Ancient Scandinavia in a Norse-mythology-inspired setting as Kratos was joined by his son, Atreus. Although a third installment has not yet been confirmed, and its setting remains a mystery, fans are hoping that an old location may just make a return.

According to original God of War programmer Tim Moss, the God of War reboot almost took fans to Ancient Egypt as opposed to Ancient Scandinavia before the setting was changed at the last minute. This comes after fans sifted through God of War Ragnarök files earlier this year, and discovered concept art for the Nile River, alongside a potential companion for Atreus, who would be known as "Mau", the Egyptian word for cat. Now, in a recent interview with Retro Gamer, Moss spoke about the rumored direction of the God of War franchise in a little more detail.

"The main myths we looked at were the obvious ones: Egyptian and Norse."

However, after much deliberation, Santa Monica settled on taking the series to Ancient Scandinavia after determining that Norse mythology was "familiar but not familiar." However, Moss added, "I think the plan was to do Egyptian [mythology] at some point." So, you never know what the future may hold.

Is This Where God Of War 6 Is Headed?

Although Ancient Egypt has not yet been confirmed to be the next setting for the God of War franchise, it seems as though all the pieces are in place for it to go ahead. However, with Santa Monica Studios not yet confirming the God of War Ragnarök sequel, it remains to be seen when, and if, we will get to see the continuation of Kratos and Atreus' story. In the meantime, at least we have the live-action television adaptation, Sons of Sparta spin-off, and even a remastered trilogy to look forward to.
