James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

The Norse God of War games did a great job of telling a cohesive and genuinely touching story arc, a narrative where Kratos was given a ton of depth as a protagonist, while other iconic characters rose up around him.

That said, the events of Ragnarök concluded that particular part of the story very well, and the God of War series feels like it's ready for a distinct next step. There's every chance that there could be a more subtle evolution, with a new world and faces to meet along the way, but talk is growing about a much more stark potential change, and it would be a significant risk if it were to prove true.

Could God Of War 6 Replace Kratos?

Over on Twitter/X, the user Pirat_Nation shared rumors which suggests that the next mainline game in the God of War series could replace Kratos. The post reads:

"A new God of War rumor suggests the series may continue with an Atreus-led game. According to recent reports, the next mainline title is expected to focus on Atreus and could release after the rumored Faye game, but before any remake project. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, so for now it remains speculation."

The comments in response to the post were largely not sold on the idea, though some could see the potential. "How can it still be called God of War if Kratos is no longer the main character? This isn't Star Wars or 40k where the selling point is the setting. God of War's main selling point is Kratos as the main character. Without him then there's no franchise," one comment read.

"Atreus has been the weakest part of the last two games, they would have to work extra hard to make him even half as good a protagonist as Kratos. Really setting this franchise up to fail here," another added.

A third was a little more positive, saying, "I’m fine with this as long as the game is not called 'God of War'. Atreus is not the God of War. Call it 'God of Mischief' and that would work."

Who Could Lead God Of War In Kratos' Place?

God of War Atreus

Outside of Atreus, there aren't too many obvious choices to replace Kratos as the protagonist of God of War from the existing cast of characters, if we assume Faye is ruled out because she's already earmarked for the spin-off. They could always go down the entirely original route and create a fresh face to take the reigns, but that massively risks the recognizability that Kratos brings.
