God Of War 6 Has Been Confirmed

The God of War franchise is officially back and more alive than ever, though fans have been a bit divided over the release of God of War Laufey, which got an extensive gameplay reveal trailer earlier this year at PlayStation's June 2026 State of Play. While we knew that it was deep in development, it wasn't clear exactly when Laufey would be released, and it raised many questions about Kratos's fate and the future of the franchise.

With Laufey taking center stage at the State of Play, fans of the franchise were rightfully feeling a bit nervous that Kratos wasn't the main protagonist of Santa Monica's next major GoW release. However, thanks to a massive announcement at this year's San Diego Comic Con event yesterday, gamers can set those worries aside, as God of War 6 has officially been confirmed, and it's coming sooner than most of us probably expected (via TSA).

In an update from Santa Monica's Head of Creative, Cory Barlog, during the panel for God of War Laufey, we got an official release date announcement for February 16, 2027. It was a massive and surprising announcement, and is coming out much sooner than many anticipated. However, that wasn't the only major reveal from Barlog at the event, as he confirmed that the next mainline game is coming after Laufey and will definitely feature Kratos as the main protagonist.

Given Laufey is only about seven months away at this point, it's possible we'll be getting our hands on God of War 6 not long after Laufey's release, though no specific release window was provided. God of War 6 will officially bring back Kratos to reprise his role as the main character, and is expected to connect directly to the events of Laufey as well, serving as a sequel of sorts.

This has massive implications for what's possible in the next God of War game after Laufey, as it gives Santa Monica a gateway to new mythologies, settings, enemies, etc., that may have otherwise felt a little obscure. With Laufey serving as a bridge to other worlds and mythos through the Everywhen, there are literally endless possibilities for where Kratos ends up in God of War 6.

The news will come as a welcome confirmation to fans who were nervous about the franchise's future, though it's already been confirmed that Kratos isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Earlier this year, Barlog confirmed there would "always ... be Kratos games," though it wasn't clear at the time exactly how those would connect or be affected by God of War Laufey until now.
