While Gilmore Girls fans have been clamoring for Amy Sherman-Palladino to give us another sequel series, her recently announced project is a better direction for the writer-creator. Having left Gilmore Girls in its divisive seventh and final season, Sherman-Palladino returned to helm the 2016 Netflix follow-up miniseries, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.
As thrilling as it was to catch up with Lorelai and Rory, A Year in the Life ultimately left the fandom cold, particulary due to the unsatisfying cliffhanger of Rory's pregnancy. Gilmore Girls season 9 remains a possibility, with Sherman-Palladino consistently stating that the door is always open for a return to Stars Hollow. However, we may have a long time to wait considering the latest exciting development in her career.
Gilmore Girls Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino Is Making Her First Feature Film
Amy Sherman-Palladino is a titan of the small screen, but she's now expanding her repertoire to movies. On February 10, Deadline reported that Sherman-Palladino will be writing and directing a feature film adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's 2025 New York Times bestselling novel, The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits.
Universal Pictures brought Sherman-Palladino onto the project after acquiring the rights to The Griffin Sisters in a competitive auction. The novel centers on sisters Cassie and Zoe Griffin, a 2000s popstar duo who skyrocket to fame only to be brought down by the often-brutal industry and an embittered falling out.
The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits isn't the only film project Sherman-Palladino is working on. The Gilmore Girls creator will also write and direct Netflix's Ryan Reynold-starring movie adaptation of Eloise, an iconic children's book series about the titular little girl and her misadventures living in New York City's historic Plaza Hotel.
Whether The Griffin Sisters or Eloise becomes Sherman-Palladino's feature film directorial debut comes down to which movie finishes production first. However, the more projects she commits to, the longer it will take for another Gilmore Girls revival — but that might not be a bad thing.
Why The Griffin Sisters Proves We Don't Need Gilmore Girls Season 9
Between Gilmore Girls and the award-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amy Sherman-Palladino has defined herself as one of the most prominent voices in female-led TV. She couldn't have picked a better project than an adaptation of a Jennifer Weiner novel, particularly The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits.
Weiner's entire bibliography is centered around the female experience. Her novels showcase the lives of modern women with emotional complexity, nuance, and depth — a description that also applies to Gilmore Girls. Sherman-Palladino is the perfect person to tackle the themes of Weiner's work while also bringing her own signature wit to The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits.
Given the Stars Hollow musical storyline in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which featured several Broadway cameos, it's clear that Sherman-Palladino has a passion for music, so it's a safe bet she'll do justice to the musical story of the Griffin Sisters. Beyond that,The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits being a tailor-made project for Sherman-Palladino further accentuates why we don't need a Gilmore Girls season 9.
I'll be the first to admit that I've previously wished for more Gilmore Girls, but Sherman-Palladino gave us one of television's greatest gifts with the show, and it's time to move on. Despite the low points of the franchise, namely season 7 and A Year in the Life, Gilmore Girls is still so beloved in the hearts of multiple generations.
Creating another sequel will only risk further alienating the fanbase after A Year in the Life's upsetting ending, when there are so many other great stories for Sherman-Palladino to tell. The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits is only the tip of the iceberg.
The Griffin Sisters Could Be The Comeback Amy Sherman-Palladino Deserves
Abaca Press/INSTARimagesAmy Sherman-Palladino has nothing to prove — but the world of pop culture is a better place with the more of her we have in it. While some of her projects have been better than others, those that were less successful were ofen undeservedly so, specifically her 2025 Prime Video series, Étoile.
A comedy-drama series revolving on two world-famous ballet companies, Étoile was greenlit for two seasons but ultimately canceled after just one despite critical acclaim. Interestingly, this isn't the first time Sherman-Palladino has had bad luck with a ballet series, as her 2013 ABC family series, Bunheads, suffered a similar fate.
It's time for Amy Sherman-Palladino to have a hit again, and given that The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits already has a built-in fanbase of devoted readers, the Jennifer Weiner adaptation will likely be just that. Ultimately, this is so much more important than knowing who the father of Rory's baby is.
