It’s been a rough start to the year for Gerard Butler, who has thus far starred in a violently underperforming Greenland 2: Migration. However, nearly 20 years ago, Butler starred in a critically panned crime thriller that’s now redeeming itself on multiple streaming services. In 2009, Butler starred alongside Jamie Foxx (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Leslie Bibb (The White Lotus) in Law Abiding Citizen, the action thriller following a frustrated man who takes justice into his own hands after one of his family’s killers goes free. Law Abiding Citizen is in the VOD top 10 on both Apple TV and OSN in countries such as Azerbaijan and Tunisia.

In America, Law Abiding Citizen is streaming for free on Tubi, but it likely won’t be long before it returns to one of the big paid streaming services like Netflix or HBO Max. In Law Abiding Citizen, Gerard Butler plays Clyde Shelton, the man who seeks revenge for those who killed his family. When the execution for one of his family’s killers goes awry, and he suffers a terrible fate, detective Nick Rice (Foxx) suspects that Shelton is behind it. This sets Rice on Shelton, but he doesn’t realize just how long he’s been plotting revenge.

Kurt Wimmer wrote the script for Law Abiding Citizen, and F. Gary Gray directed the film. Wimmer is also known for his work writing the screenplay for The Beekeeper, the 2024 action smash hit starring Jason Statham. Law Abiding Citizen earned scores of 26% from critics and 75% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $127 million at the box office against a $50 million budget. It was a surprising financial hit considering the poor reviews.

Gerard Butler’s Next Movie Has Already Begun Filming

Just last week, Universal announced that the How to Train Your Dragon 2 live-action remake had begun production. The studio shared the news on social media, accompanied by a photo of writer-director Dean DeBlois, who is tasked with adapting the source material again. The film is currently scheduled for release on June 11, 2027, and is expected to meet that date, as filming has already begun. Butler is also due to begin shooting his third Den of Thieves movie soon — his co-star O’Shea Jackson Jr. recently confirmed this news to Collider.
