Following the disastrous box office performance of Greenland 2: Migration, star Gerard Butler can take solace in the sudden success of his overlooked thriller Copshop on streaming. Copshop was released theatrically in 2021, but it flopped at the box office despite earning positive reviews. The movie was essentially set in a single location, and followed a hitman who gets himself incarcerated in the same jail as the man he's pursuing. Copshop was directed by Joe Carnahan, who is currently experiencing major streaming success with his new film, The Rip. Starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, The Rip opened to positive reviews and topped the Netflix charts for over two weeks.
According to FlixPatrol, Copshop replaced The Rip on Netflix's domestic leaderboard on February 3. Produced on a reported budget of more than $40 million, Copshop made under $7 million at the box office. However, it remains one of Butler's best-reviewed films in the last decade. Copshop holds a "Certified Fresh" 83% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, higher than Greenland (78%), Plane (78%), the How to Train Your Dragon remake (77%), and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (62%). In fact, it's Butler's top-rated starring vehicle since 2018's The Vanishing. The Rotten Tomatoes critics' consensus for Copshop reads, "It doesn't add many new ingredients to the genre, but action fans in the mood for an old-school thriller will be happy to buy what Copshop is selling."
Both Gerard Butler and Joe Carnahan Have Several Movies Charting on Home Video
Copshop also featured a regular collaborator with Carnahan, Frank Grillo, and scored higher on Rotten Tomatoes than their previous movies together, Boss Level (74%) and The Grey (80%). In addition to The Rip and Copshop, Carnahan is seeing success with his other 2025 release, Not Without Hope, which was among the most-watched movies on the domestic Amazon charts concurrently. Meanwhile, Greenland 2 is attempting to redeem itself on PVOD after an underwhelming box office performance, when it grossed just around $20 million against a reported budget of $90 million. On February 2, it was among the most-watched movies on the domestic Amazon, iTunes, and Vudu charts. You can get a double-dose of Butler with Greenland 2 and Copshop at home. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
