Gerard Butler's 700-Year Spanning Crime Thriller Is Officially Coming to Netflix

It hasn’t exactly been a picture-perfect start to the year for Gerard Butler, who starred in one of the first movies of 2026 with Greenland 2: Migration. The sequel to the 2020 disaster thriller leaned more into sci-fi the second time around, which cost Lionsgate around $90 million to make the film. Unfortunately, it recuperated only $44 million of this back at the box office during its entire run, branding it one of the biggest sci-fi flops ever. Butler has other projects in the works, though, including a third Den of Thieves movie with O’Shea Jackson Jr., which is scheduled to begin production this summer. Butler will also be seen reprising his role as Stoick in the live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon, which is even bringing back Cate Blanchett to play Valka.

One of the most intriguing projects on the slate for Butler is In The Hand Of Dante, the historical crime thriller that unfolds over 700 years. Part of the story takes place in the 1300s, following Dante as he writes one of the most famous scripts of all time, The Divine Comedy. The other takes place in the early 2000s, following an older reincarnation of Dante who gets caught up in a plot to steal and authenticate the priceless work. Based on the novel by Nick Tosches and written/directed by Julian Schnabel, In The Hand Of Dante features a stacked ensemble of talent, including Butler, Oscar Isaac, Al Pacino, Jason Momoa, Martin Scorsese, Gal Gadot, John Malkovich, Sabrina Impacciatore, Franco Nero, Benjamin Clementine, Paolo Bonacelli, and more. News broke this afternoon that Netflix has emerged as the winner of a bidding war for In The Hand Of Dante, acquiring the film for distribution. The streamer has not yet announced an official streaming date for the title.

Does ‘In The Hand Of Dante’ Have Good Reviews?

In The Hand Of Dante had a limited premiere last September at the Venice Film Festival, with the film being screened to a select few critics in attendance. While this is still a relatively small sample size, it was enough to earn a Rotten 43% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. This comes from only 21 reviews, so it is subject to change as more scores come in once the film has a more concrete release strategy. In The Hand Of Dante won't have an audience score on the Popcornmeter until its worldwide premiere.
