It may have come to a less-than-pleasing end back in 2019, but that has not stopped the Game of Thrones universe from continuing to boast record-breaking levels of popularity ever since. Partly thanks to the recent success of spin-off shows, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, the world created by George R.R. Martin in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise is as loved as ever, and this upcoming release is no exception.
Developed by PlaySide Studios, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is an upcoming real-time strategy video game based on the beloved television series. Announced back in June 2025 and set to launch on PC, it will allow players to take control of the armies of House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and even the army of the Night King, in order to dominate the battlefield and claim the Iron Throne.
Featuring some familiar faces, such as Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, and more, gameplay will consist of taking control of various different forces, including infantry, dragons, and giants. Complete with single or multiplayer modes, War for Westeros will also launch alongside a campaign mode for those looking for more of a story, or a skirmish mode for non-stop gameplay.
Despite previous reports that Game of Thrones: War for Westeros would launch some time this year, a recent blog post by PlaySide Studios has revealed that the highly anticipated title will now launch in early 2027.
"We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans," the blog post reads. "This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for. Thank you for your patience and continued support. We know the wait has been long, and we do not take your support for granted."
Although it is another delay to contend with, we are sure that it will be worth the wait, especially as the aforementioned blog post also gives us some sneak peeks at the combat styles we will have to contend with in War for Westeros. This includes the abilities of Jon Snow and Tywin Lannister, as well as more information surrounding factions and heroes, combat and units, and maps. With plenty more development updates to come, it is worth keeping up to date with the Steam page.
So, if you are a big Game of Thrones fan, or just want to get stuck into an incredible real-time strategy title, make sure to keep Game of Thrones: War for Westeros on your radar ready for the new year.
