There is no shortage of unique and addictive hidden gems available on Steam, and gamers who are looking for something to scratch their fantasy itch have nearly endless options. The platform is host to thousands of fantasy games that range across every imaginable genre, from action RPGs to narrative-driven adventures to puzzle-platfomers and beyond.

However, when it comes to real-time strategy (RTS) games, there's a flood of distinct and original titles out there that make it incredibly easy to overlook some of the higher-quality entries. If you're in the market for a fantasy game that incorporates elements from the iconic Game of Thrones franchise with hints of the fan-favorite farming RPG Stardew Valley, there's a brand-new RTS game on Steam with your name on it.

Flow of War gameplay

Flow of War may look like just another typical tower defense RTS game on the surface, but it incorporates some unique gameplay elements reminiscent of the foraging/harvesting/growing mechanics you'd find in simulation games such as Stardew Valley.

It's a fantasy-based game that features "a unique blend of base building and wave defense," where "workers automatically gather resources and manage your economy while you focus on strategy, expand and fortify your kingdom, command elite armies, and survive endless procedurally generated enemy waves."

Flow of War includes 30 different handcrafted original campaigns that range in difficulty to accommodate players looking for various levels of challenge. Each campaign has its own distinct set of buildings, units, and different mechanics, all combined in a somewhat compact game that can be completed in just 15 hours but is highly addictive once you get started.

The game also features a Random Map mode where every aspect is procedurally generated, "with customizable terrain, enemies, economy, and wave settings" that ensure "no two battles are the same." It also features a built-in Map Editor you can use to create your own experiences, opening up endless possibilities for original campaigns.

Inspired by early 2000s-style RTS games such as Warcraft 2, it definitely taps into the nostalgia nerve in the best way, and while players have noted a handful of UI/UX issues, developer Rongcon Games has already rolled out several quality-of-life improvements in the first week since its launch on August 3.

Flow of War is currently available at a discount on Steam for just around $10, and is well worth checking out if you're looking for a nostalgic 2000s-style RTS that puts a unique spin on the tower defense genre.
