Betty Gilpin Reveals Her Widow's Bay Season 2 Fate After Emmy Win

EXCLUSIVE: Is Betty Gilpin coming back to Widow's Bay?

The actor has revealed the fate of her character in Widow's Bay season 2 after winning an Emmy for her role in the show. Gilpin had a guest role as Sarah Westcott Warren, appearing most prominently in episode 6, when the history of the island and its curse were revealed. She portrays the wife of the abusive Richard Warren, whose communion with an ancient, evil entity caused the island and its people to become cursed, never allowed to leave its boundaries. Gilpin won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the show.

Speaking at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, for which ScreenRant was in attendance, Gilpin unpacked the possibility that Sarah could return in Widow's Bay season 2, despite her story seemingly coming to a close. While the actor acknowledged it was unlikely, she said she's pitched ideas to series creator Katie Dippold that could bring her character back to the series. However, as of writing, there's currently no indication that Sarah will return. However, Gilpin is happy to have been part of the show, which she praises for its quality and success.

I'm forever pitching [series creator] Katie Dippold via text ways in which it would make sense in the world of the show for me to come back. I feel like by her genius, demented Widow's Bay lore math it doesn't make sense for her to come back, but like, come on, just find it so I can come back. I would love to do that. I loved working on the show so much. Katie Dippold's brain and her work and the fact that Apple made her show a reality gives me renewed faith in our industry, honestly. Something so original, and niche, and strange, and human having success in the mainstream. It just gives me hope, honestly, that we're not totally lost in our industry.

Sarah's story added important context to the series, revealing how she attempted to rescue Richard's children from the curse, inadvertently killing all but one of them in the process. It's what leads to the twist at the end of Widow's Bay season 1, when it's revealed Tom's son, Evan, is the last living descendant of Richard Warren. While Sarah only appears in two episodes of the series, her importance is relevant to the whole show and the direction it moves in during the present day timeline.

Gilpin's win solidifies how important Sarah was to the cast of Widow's Bay, delivering a powerful performance that centered around one particular character in the story's larger mythos. However, her role was mostly centered around the Warren bloodline, with her actions being the reason why only one descendant remains alive by the end of season 1. This makes it less likely for her to come back in season 2, especially because there's no indication she returned to the island.

However, there's still plenty of mystery surrounding the show's namesake location, meaning she could still be involved in the lore in some capacity. It's already been proven that character roles can grow and change over time, such as Jeff Hiller getting promoted to a series regular for season 2. Although the door appears closed to Gilpin for now, the twists and turns in the series make it possible for her to come back, should Dippold have a specific vision for her potential return.

For now, however, Widow's Bay is proving itself a popular and unique show on Apple TV, with Gilpin's praise ringing true regardless of her character's fate. Although there's no word yet if she'll come back or not, her Emmy win solidifies Sarah as one of the most vital presences in the series. She added plenty of new context to the lore, which will no doubt continue to be important when season 2 arrives.
