It continues to astound that Game of Thrones, the immensely popular multimedia franchise, lacks a truly exceptional video game, or, for that matter, an above-average one. While there have been attempts at adapting the show and books into video game form, none have reached the same heights or levels of popularity as the original versions. It is a shame, but one that will, in the future, hopefully be rectified.
Indeed, there are upcoming Game of Thrones games in active development, although they're still months, if not years, away from being even remotely playable. Fortunately, there's an alternative available right now for fans of the show to play, one that blends the very best aspects of Game of Thrones with Minecraft. While the two don't feel as if they'd work well together, given the extremely violent nature of the former and the broad appeal of the latter, it actually works extremely well and coalesces to create the definitive open-world GoT experience, at least for now.
Minecraft Players Never Cease To Amaze
Since 2011, a group of dedicated Game of Thrones fans has been rebuilding the entire continent of Westeros within Minecraft. A number of key iconic cities, keeps, and locations have been faithfully recreated and are completely explorable by joining up to their server, WesterosCraft, which can be found on their official website. It is a truly remarkable effort, one that undeniably illustrates the passion and dedication of the Minecraft community, as well as its immense talent.
King's Landing alone has 5201 unique homes alongside dozens of locations pulled directly from the books. It is fascinating exploring each of the available regions, or just watching the walkthroughs uploaded by the official YouTube channel. While there have been plenty of Minecraft crossovers with popular games, this has to be not only one of the biggest, but also one of the best. It is a staggering achievement, the likes of which absolutely prove the power and worth of Minecraft as a tool and video game. Better still, it also serves as a truly exceptional open-world Game of Thrones game.
Explore An Open-World Westeros
Of course, aside from being an excellent way of making Minecraft more exciting, WesterosCraft is perhaps the only way fans can truly explore an open-world Westeros as we'd all dreamed of back when we first read the books or watched the show. It is a truly massive open-world map, stretching roughly 1,298 km² at the time of writing, which equates to 22,000 x 59,000 blocks in-game. Currently, WesterosCraft starts from beyond the Wall and runs all the way to Dorne, with an abundance of spaces accessible in between.
There are currently 10 regions available, with 528 builds located within them, 317 of which have been completed at the time of writing, and 87 of which are in progress.
The team behind WesterosCraft also intends to build all of Essos too, although, naturally, considering it's taken 15 years to build much of Westeros, fans shouldn't expect it any time soon. Regardless, there's a richness to WesterosCraft's interpretation of Game of Thrones, with each available region packed full of fun details both in the exterior locations and interiors. It makes simply wandering through these iconic locations a transformative experience the likes of which few other video games can offer.
Until we get an official open-world Game of Thrones RPG, and indeed afterward, WesterosCraft shall serve as a spellbindingly beautiful and immersive way of exploring the Seven Kingdoms. It is easy to access, with instructions on how to play available on the website, and completely free to explore. There's literally no reason not to visit Westeros and explore its hallowed halls, striking landscapes, and iconic battlefields. Game of Thrones may not have had an official game live up to the lofty expectations set by the books and show, but this fan-made Minecraft mod more than makes up for it.
