Taylor Sheridan has largely had the neo-Western market cornered these days over on Paramount+. Between Yellowstone and its recent spin-offs, Marshals and Dutton Ranch, Landman, and the grittiest of them all, the Sylvester Stallone-led crime drama Tulsa King, he has an entire catalog of modern-day cowboys, gangsters, and roughnecks to suit viewers' tastes. As of April, editing was well underway on the fourth season of the latter, promising the next chapter in the story of Dwight "The General" Manfredi and his criminal empire as soon as the end of this year. In the meantime, FX's own stab at the genre is gearing up for Season 2 and is continuing to bring aboard some new names.

Also set in Tulsa, The Lowdown premiered last year and introduced viewers to Lee Raybon, a citizen journalist, rare book dealer, and self-styled "truthistorian" who knows way too much for his own good, played by five-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke. The series follows Raybon as his nose for the truth constantly leads him into trouble, particularly once he starts sniffing around the wealthy and powerful Washberg family. Critics and audiences lauded the series as it followed its colorful detective into a conspiracy, giving it a strong 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes and more than enough momentum to warrant a renewal. Since then, a handful of big new additions have been made to Raybon's orbit, including GLOW star Betty Gilpin, The Walking Dead alum Austin Amelio, and, most shocking of all, Tommy Lee Jones in his first television role in over 40 years and first acting role period in three.

Now, according to a new report, Hawke will be joined by two more Emmy nominees in Martha Plimpton and Clifton Collins Jr. Originally rising to prominence as part of The Goonies, Plimpton has become a force on television, being tapped for a gold statuette three times between Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Raising Hope, and The Good Wife, earning her lone Emmy win as a guest in the latter. More recently, she enjoyed a strong 2025, starting with Prime Target before starring in the much-acclaimed HBO series Task led by Mark Ruffalo. For Collins, The Lowdown will be a return to FX after his Emmy-nominated work in the miniseries Thief, though he's also known for his work in Westworld and a smattering of movies from Star Trek to Traffic, Nightmare Alley, and Train Dreams.
