Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for From season 4, episode 1, "The Arrival."After only one episode, From season 4 has already confirmed the best theory about the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes). The mysterious and terrifying character first appears in the From season 3 finale, warning that knowledge comes at a cost before tearing out the throat of Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey). His last words to Jim in season 3 are, "Your wife shouldn't have dug that hole, Jim," which is also what the voice on the radio says at the end of season 1.
From season 4, episode 1, "Arrival" picks up in the immediate aftermath of season 3's final scene, as the Man in Yellow tells time-traveling Julie Matthews (Hannah Cheramy) that she can't change the story. As Jim draws his final breaths, the Man in Yellow gleefully teases that what happens next is his favorite part. This is later revealed to involve him physically transforming into the guise of Sophia (Julia Doyle), who the residents mistakenly believe is the latest person to be trapped in the Township.
From Season 4, Episode 1 Confirms The Man In Yellow Poses As A Newcomer
The Man in Yellow posing as Sophia confirms the From season 4 theory that I wrote about a year ago, which is that the villain would pretend to be a newcomer to the Township. The idea is that instead of sowing fear and chaos as a voice on the radio or from afar, he can terrorize them more directly and potentially also stop them from getting closer to learning important truths about the Town or how to escape it.
What I didn't anticipate was the Man in Yellow infiltrating the Township in a completely different physical form. It's a smart move, though, as even though Jim is dead and present-day Julie hasn't encountered the Man in Yellow yet during her time travel, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and Jade Herrera (David Alpay) may have recognized him now that they remember details from their past lives, or Henry Kavanaugh (Robert Joy) may have from his wife's paintings.
From season 4 is another masterful outing from TV's prestige mystery box horror series, keeping scares and dynamics fresh as more answers arrive.
There is no reason for any of From's characters to suspect that the seemingly vulnerable and sheltered pastor's daughter who arrived to Town in a car, just as everyone else has, is secretly the villain who may be responsible for all their suffering. They do not know that the pastor (Rhys Bevan-John) was alone when he encountered the fallen tree in the road, that he only picked her up after that, and she caused the vehicle to crash into the sheriff's station.
While many of From's mysteries take a while to be answered, including those from season 1 that remain unresolved, season 4 does not draw out the mystery of who Sophia is or what the Man in Yellow does after killing Jim. The end of season 4, episode 1 makes it clear that he is Sophia, which sets up excellent tension moving forward, especially given what he teases about his upcoming plan.
The Man In Yellow's Plan Explained
Before the Man in Yellow suffocates the pastor, he says that his favorite part, which comes next, is seeing the residents tear themselves apart. Instead of the nocturnal monsters or lethal hallucinations doing the most harm, it appears that the next stage is turning the residents against one another, to the point where they will be the ones doing the killings. This is much easier to achieve with the Man in Yellow disguised as one of them, where he can more easily stoke conflict and push them past their breaking point.
Beyond this, it's unclear what his plan entails, but telling Jim and the pastor that it's his favorite part confirms that it has happened before, likely during some of the past lives that Tabitha and Jade have lived. The idea of fan-favorite characters, including those who are family or close friends, killing each other reaches a new level of horror and potentially sets up some of the most devastating deaths yet.
The Matthews family, Jade, Henry, Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord), Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) and the other present-day From characters are far from the first to go through this cycle, but it remains to be seen whether they can break it or realize who Sophia is before it is too late.
