The history of the Red Hot Chili Peppers is filled with turbulence and extreme situations, but even though they are no strangers to tragedy, it was in 1998 that they were truly on the verge of breaking up. A decade before, in 1988, founding members Flea and Anthony Kiedis had to face the tragic loss of their original guitarist, Hillel Slovak, to a drug overdose. They were devastated, which led to their original drummer, Jack Irons, quitting the band, but even then they never thought about disbanding. The two of them set out to rebuild the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and when drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante joined, they finally reached mainstream stardom with the release of their fifth album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

They didn't know, however, that the worst was yet to come. They would have several lineup changes, near-death experiences, and in 1998, they almost reached their breaking point. It was the first time they were sure they had reached the end of the line. And then, a miracle happened. A friend returned, they got serious about their health, and turned to music to heal. The result was one of their best albums to date, the one that brought them back together, and that introduced the band to a new generation of fans. Here's the story of Californication.

The Band Was on the Verge of Breaking Up in 1998

In 1992, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were on top of the world. Blood Sugar Sex Magik was topping the charts with hits like "Give it Away," "Suck My Kiss," and the all-time classic ballad, "Under the Bridge." They embarked on a world tour of the record, but soon enough, disaster struck. Guitarist John Frusciante was having a hard time dealing with the sudden whirlwind of fame and exposure. When he joined the band a few years before, he was only 18, almost a decade younger than his bandmates, and in only four years, his life had changed drastically. That led him to become very withdrawn and dour, Anthony Kiedis shares in his 2004 memoir, Scar Tissue, and it caused a lot of infighting, especially between Frusciante and Kiedis. Additionally, the young guitarist started experimenting with hard drugs at that time, and it all reached a breaking point right before a show in Japan, when he told his bandmates he was quitting the band and wouldn't be going on stage.

That night, the band convinced Frusciante to play the show, but the following day, he quit for good. In the chaos, Kiedis, Flea, and Chad Smith were only focused on moving forward. They haphazardly recruited touring guitarist Arik Marshall to cover for Frusciante, and later, they found a more permanent replacement in Dave Navarro. Navarro's band, Jane's Addiction, had broken up at the time, and the Chili Peppers quickly brought him on board. The newly formed foursome went on to release One Hot Minute in 1995, and while there were some memorable hits in it, like "Aeroplane" and "My Friends," the album received a muted response, especially in comparison to their previous release. The band also admitted that, while Navarro was an incredible musician, their styles weren't compatible.

While the band was going through these lineup issues, Frusciante was holed up in his house, battling what seemed like a losing battle against his heroin addiction. The only member of the band who stayed in touch with their former guitarist was Flea, and the bassist was very disturbed by Frusciante's state. He plainly admitted that he was sure the guitarist wouldn't survive this, and he was helplessly watching his best friend wither. At the same time, both Navarro and Kiedis relapsed, and as Navarro's drug use got out of control, the Chili Peppers fired him in 1998. It was the only time they saw no way forward, and Flea approached Kiedis with an ultimatum: the only way he would stay in the band was if they got Frusciante back. Kiedis says in his memoir that he was sure they would break up, as there was no way Frusciante would be healthy enough to play, and even if he was, he wouldn't want to see him. Little did he know, Flea's hope wasn't misplaced, as the guitarist was slowly on the mend.

Frusciante's Unlikely Return and the Making of 'Californication'

In 1998, after losing most of his money and being on the verge of death many times, John Frusciante finally entered rehab. It was during that time that Flea told Kiedis about possibly getting Frusciante back into the band, and cautiously, Kiedis decided to visit the guitarist and extend an olive branch. They slowly reconciled, and when they were finally on good terms, Flea asked the guitarist if he would return to the band. Frusciante enthusiastically agreed, but warned his bandmates that he had not played guitar in a long time. Not only that, but at the lowest point in his drug use, he had sold all of his guitars.

The All-American Rejects' Nick Wheeler discusses the band's upcoming album sharing new details about the music, creative process, and the next era.

As part of his effort to make amends, Kiedis gifted him a 1962 Fender Stratocaster so he could get back into shape. Slowly but surely, they started rebuilding the band. They would meet in Flea's garage, where they got back to basics and got used to playing together again. Many emotional songs, such as "Scar Tissue" and "Otherside," reflect on the darkness they were coming out of. Frusciante had to keep his playing simple as he strengthened his skills, and that less is more approach is what truly makes Californication shine.

They had no expectations for the album except rekindling their friendship and musical relationship, so it was a surprise to them when the completed album received such a great response. To date, Californication is their best-selling album, and it truly marked the rebirth of the legendary funk-rock band, going into the 21st century. What followed was a series of 10/10 albums, and the early 2000s were taken over by this new but familiar lineup.

In 2019, after another long absence, Frusciante returned to the band, and once again, the magic of the Chili Peppers is back.
