Keep an eye on those security cameras, because Freddy Fazbear and his band of merry murderous animatronics are back with a vengeance in Five Nights at Freddy's 2. Based on the viral horror video game series, Blumhouse's Five Nights at Freddy's adaptation became the surprise horror hit of 2023. Despite a same-day release on Peacock, the film went on to shatter expectations at the global box office, grossing nearly $300 million in profit. Considering the movie reportedly only cost $20 million (adhering to Blumhouse's mantra of "low budget, high concept" filmmaking), a sequel was all but inevitable.
The first film saw a down-on-his-luck security guard, Mike (Josh Hutcherson), take an unusual job to serve as a security guard at an abandoned Chuck E. Cheese knock-off called Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. Little does Mike know that the uncanny and creepy animatronic characters in the restaurant are possessed by vengeful spirits, and their idea of playtime is hardly kid-friendly. For all the current details about Blumhouse's horror sequel, such as its cast, plot details, release date, and more, here is everything we know so far about Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

5 Does 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2' Have a Trailer?
Being about a year out from release, we'll have to be patient for a new trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 2. However, Blumhouse did give a brief first glimpse at the upcoming follow-up at the 2024 New York Comic Con with a brand-new poster. Not only does the poster further confirm the film's December release date, but it also teases the arrival of "Toy Freddy", indicating that the movie sequel is at least somewhat directly adapting the game's sequel.
4 Who Stars in 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2'?
Josh Hutcherson |
Mike Schmidt |
Matthew Lillard |
William Afton |
Elizabeth Lail |
Vanessa |
Piper Rubio |
Abby |
Several main characters from the first Five Nights at Freddy's movie are set to reprise their roles for the sequel. This includes Josh Hutcherson as Mike the security guard, who just narrowly escaped with his sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), in the previous film. Best known for his role as Peeta in the Hunger Games saga, Hutcherson's other previous work includes Future Man and The Beekeeper. Hutcherson teased the "scarier" sequel in an October interview with Esquire:
"We’re finding the balance right now of building this world and expanding it in a really cool way but also making sure the characters stay really grounded. That’s something that I really think that we all fought for in the first film, because this world that was created in ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s,’ it’s so out-there. It’s so over-the-top and wacky, in a way, that to find the emotional truth of the characters was gonna be what was gonna work."
Also returning as the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise's big bad is horror icon Matthew Lillard. First appearing as a shifty social worker, Lillard's character in the first film is eventually revealed as William Afton - a ruthless serial killer who is responsible for most of the tragic events in the Five Nights universe. Lillard's legendary status as a horror icon is in large part thanks to his breakout role as Stu Macher in the original Scream and as Shaggy in various Scooby-Doo projects. Though Mr. Afton appeared to suffer a grim fate at the end of the original movie, Lillard has repeatedly confirmed he'll be back for the sequel, such as this recent interview with Collider:
"Here's the great news – I think the fans fell in love with what we did, I think [creator Scott Cawthon] is the shepherd of this incredible project and I think collectively the filmmakers listened to some of the criticism that they got, and they're growing. I think this film is going to be tonally a little different. I think we're going to have a lot more. I think it's going to be an action-packed film. Again, I think it's fan-centric, and I think they're going to love it."
You star Elizabeth Lail and For All Mankind star Piper Rubio are also expected to return as Vanessa and Abby respectively.
3 What Is the 'Five Nights at Freddy's' Story So Far?
The first Five Nights at Freddy's movie begins with Mike Schmidt losing his job as a security guard in a local mall after he accidentally accuses a father of abducting a child. This fiasco puts Mike at risk of losing custody of his little sister, Abby, so he needs a job and needs one fast. Mike already lost his younger brother many years ago, so he can't lose another one of his family members. Thankfully, Mike gets a job offer to keep an eye on the abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, and after taking Abby with him one night, begins to think the restaurant's animatronics are alive.
Following his meeting with a suspicious police officer named Vanessa, Mike not only soon discovers the animatronics are possessed by the souls of murdered children, but they've even befriended young Abby. However, soon enough, bodies start piling up, and the rogue animatronics are clearly responsible. Even worse, Mike also discovers that the man who gave him this job is a serial killer named William Afton who killed the children that now possess the animatronics, as well as Mike's brother. Though Vanessa reveals herself as William's daughter, she helps Mike and Abby escape William's clutches after Abby shows the animatronics that William is their killer. Abby is put into a coma in the process and William is left wounded in the derelict halls of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria, presumably plotting his revenge.
The poster for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 and behind-the-scenes photos confirm that the animatronics seen in the video game titled Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be in the film. According to the lore of the games, the game version Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is believed to be a prequel to the original game, featuring earlier and fancier-looking models of the signature Freddy Fazbear crew. Only time will tell if that same route will be taken in Blumhouse's adaptation.
2 Who is Making 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2'?
As per usual with every Blumhouse film, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will once again be produced by horror icon Jason Blum, who has worked on everything from The Purge to the new Halloween trilogy. The film is also set to feature Emma Tammi as director and co-writer.
