Everybody is abuzz with excitement as the long-awaited release of Grand Theft Auto 6 gets closer. Rockstar's latest returns the franchise to Vice City, the game's Miami-inspired setting. But there's another crime-ridden version of Miami to get excited about beyond GTA 6. On Monday, Universal Pictures showed the first look at its upcoming Miami Vice reboot, giving us a peak at Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the period crime drama.
The latest reboot, titled Miami Vice '85, was first revealed last April. Top Gun: Maverick and F1 director Joseph Kosinski is attached to helm the film with a script by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler, Kong: Skull Island). Jordan and Butler will star as undercover detectives Tubbs and Crockett, respectively.
The first look post on social media also reveals that production on Miami Vice '85 is fully underway. The film is slated for release on May 19, 2028. Jordan and Butler will be joined by a supporting cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland, and Michael Irby.
What is Miami Vice?
Image: NBCMiami Vice started life as a legendary television series that ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989. It was created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive-produced by Michael Mann. Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson originated the roles of Tubbs and Crockett, respectively. It will come as no surprise that the series heavily inspired Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Mann revisited Miami Vice in 2006 with a modernized film reboot. This time, Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell would take on the roles of Tubbs and Crockett. Kosinski's reboot, in contrast to Mann's film, will return the franchise to its roots in '80s Miami. That means you can expect to see a lot of stylish suits (as evidenced in the first look) and plenty of neon lights.
