First look at Saoirse Ronan as Paul McCartney's late wife Linda in new Beatles biopic

She was the globally famous wife of a Beatle but Linda McCartney was known for being remarkably down-to-earth.

And in keeping with Sir Paul McCartney’s late partner’s unpretentious ways, here she is being dropped off in a black taxi with young daughter Stella in scenes set in the 70s which are being filmed for Sam Mendes’ forthcoming Beatles biopic.

Saoirse Ronan who plays rock photographer Linda is seen arriving at Sir Paul’s three-storey Regency townhouse in the London enclave of St Johns Wood where the singer, portrayed by Paul Mescal, greeted her.

In keeping with 70s fashion, Ms Ronan, the four-time Oscar-nominated actress, is seen wearing a pale pink short-sleeved blouse, navy floral mini skirt and low-heeled black shoes, with her long blonde hair perfectly mirroring Linda’s.

Meanwhile, Stella, who appears to be around four-years-old, was also seen on set in a brown suede jacket trimmed with long fringing and burgundy trousers.

Sir Paul and Linda, whose maiden name was Eastman, met in the famous music club Bag O'Nails in 1967 at the height of Beatlemania.

The couple married at Marylebone Town Hall in March 1969 and remained together for almost three decades, until her death from breast cancer aged 56 in 1998.

Far from remaining in her husband’s shadow, Linda became his musical partner after The Beatles broke up, playing keyboards and singing harmonies in Wings.

Before Sir Paul met Linda, he dated model Jane Asher.

Ms Asher, now 80, is also portrayed in Mendes’s films, by Bohemian Rhapsody actress Lucy Boynton, 32.

Ms Boynton has already been spotted filming alongside Mescal in Spain, where the Costa Brava stood in for the Virgin Islands to recreate Sir Paul and Ringo Starr’s secret 1964 Caribbean holiday with their then-girlfriends.

Sam Mendes’ project described as the first ‘bingeable theatrical experience’ also stars Harris Dickinson, 30, as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn, 32, as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan, 33, as Sir Ringo Starr.

The supporting cast includes Aimee Lou Wood, 32, as Harrison's model wife Pattie Boyd, Anna Sawai, 34, as Yoko Ono and James Norton, 41, as the band's manager, Brian Epstein.

Mia McKenna-Bruce, 29, will appear as Starr's first wife, Maureen Starkey, while Harry Lloyd, 42, plays George Martin, the producer who became known as the ‘fifth Beatle.’

In Mendes's ambitious four-film anthology, each instalment will tell the story of The Beatles from a different band member's perspective.

All four films are due to be released simultaneously in 2028.
