Earlier this week saw French animation studio EuroVisual announce that its Final Fantasy IX animated television show had entered pre-production, and with funding and that all-important budget now behind it, the adaptation could begin its creation in earnest. After a rough start that saw its previous studio go into liquidation, EuroVisual was happy to pick it up, and now the Final Fantasy IX show, titled Black Mages Legacy, is seemingly in full swing.
However, what does this mean for the highly requested Final Fantasy IX remake? Well, it seems as though fans believe that the upcoming show could correspond with the launch of it, or at least an announcement from Square Enix itself.
Final Fantasy 9's Long-Rumoured Remake May Finally Be Coming
At the time of writing, an official remake of Final Fantasy IX has not been announced. First released back in 2000 as the ninth main installment in the beloved Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy IX was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, going on to welcome a re-release in 2010 and an enhanced port in 2016. However, Square Enix has yet to release a fully-fledged remake, and with the game celebrating its 26th anniversary this year, it definitely seems deserving of one.
So could the launch of Black Mages Legacy, which is expected to air some time in 2028, also mean that an official Final Fantasy IX remake is on the way? Well, according to fans over on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, this may well be the case. "If I was the conspiratorial type, I'd call this stealth marketing for a FFIX remake," one user shared. Another user agreed, adding, "I feel like I remember prior rumors said that the IX Remake was contingent upon the show releasing as a marketing duo, and then the rumors turned into the show running into trouble and possibly being canceled. This is really a stretch, but part of me also seems to remember reading that the game was far along when the show ran into issues. It could all just be wishful thinking filtered through a broken brain though."
As mentioned, Square Enix has not shared any details about a Final Fantasy IX remake, but if it was to be released in the future, it would make sense for it to arrive alongside a show inspired by the same story.
Final Fantasy 9 Fans Should Look To 2028
Nevertheless, regardless of if a Final Fantasy IX remake should come to fruition, fans of the Final Fantasy installment should still look forward to 2028 and the arrival of Black Mages Legacy. Expected to consist of ten episodes coming in at around 22 minutes each, the series' synopsis reads as follows: "Imel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala and Doc, children of the hero Bibi, are the last dark mages of the four continents. Today, they live happily in the city of ALEXANDRIA, guarded by its inhabitants who are rather friendly, although sometimes very curious. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not meant to last… One day, Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could it be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them?"
