As Final Fantasy 14 expands, the long-running MMORPG could crossover with the widely popular League of Legends franchise if the developers have anything to say about it. A lead developer expressed hopes for Riot Games, the studio behind League of Legends, to team up with Square Enix and find a way to bring the ongoing games together.

As spotted by PCGamesN, FF14 lead battle content designer Masaki Nakagawa expressed his hopes for the League of Legends crossover while promoting FF14's new Dawntrail expansion. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Nakagawa discussed his dream crossovers for FF14 and the collaborations he'd like to see. He talked about his love for playing League of Legends on his own and how having characters from each game appear in both games could be a personal dream come true.

As for other companies' titles, I personally love League of Legends and have been playing the game for a long time, so a crossover with them would be a dream come true. It would be great fun if Aatrox and Aurelion Sol were featured as raid bosses in FF14. It might also be quite interesting to have FF14 characters implemented as crossover champions in League of Legends! If a Riot Games representative is reading this, it would be an honor if I could speak with you!

Dream Crossover For Both Franchises Has Potential

FF14 And League of Legends Could Be A Natural Fit

FF14's Dawntrail expansion launched over the summer and brought along significant additions to the MMORPG. Screen Rant called the expansion a "must-play" calling its South American-inspired setting and lighter tone a breath of fresh air from more recent intense expansions. A part of the expansion is the new Echoes of Vana'diel Raid, which is itself a crossover with Square Enix's original MMORPG Final Fantasy 11.

The new raid has been praised by fans and critics for its challenging combat and thrilling multi-boss battles. Likewise, League of Legends is known for its unique approach to gameplay and has encroached into combat-heavy games like the fighting game ZXKO. League of Legends is also known for its approach to unique champions with their own fantasy inspirations, and could be a unique fit with FF14. As Nakagawa said, champions from the game could be easy fits for boss battles that are a key part of raids like in the Echoes of Vana'diel Raid.

FF14 Has Done Crossovers Outside of The Final Fantasy Franchise Before

In his interview, Nakagawa explained that the Final Fantasy 14 team wanted to crossover with Final Fantasy 11 as many of the FF14 developers are fans of the original Final Fantasy MMORPG. While the collaboration with Final Fantasy 11 was easy enough to pull off since it's within Square Enix's wheelhouse, a League of Legends crossover would be more challenging, but it wouldn't be without precedent. FF14 has collaborated with the party game Fall Guys twice, the latest being the Blunderville event that includes Fall Guys-inspired cosmetics.

Fall Guys and League of Legends couldn't be more different, but the ability to crossover with franchises outside Square Enix's library is possible. While there might be some heavy lifting to get Square Enix and Riot Games to agree to a deal, fans would surely love the chance to see what eager developers like Nakagawa could pull off. With celebrated gameplay and ever-expanding fan bases, the two franchises could be a perfect fit.
