FC Barcelona lists Jules Koundé for sale, and its fan token holders are watching closely

2 hours ago 6

FC Barcelona are reportedly open to offers between €60 million and €80 million for French defender Jules Koundé, a move driven by La Liga’s salary cap regulations rather than concerns about his on-field performance.

Barcelona paid roughly €55 million to bring Koundé from Sevilla in 2022. He has been one of the most versatile players on the roster, slotting in at both center-back and right-back depending on the tactical need. His contract was extended through 2030 just months before the club placed him on the transfer list.

Barcelona’s recent signing of Anthony Gordon added significant cost to an already strained wage bill. La Liga enforces strict financial controls, and clubs that exceed their salary limits face restrictions on registering new players. Listing Koundé at a price range starting at €60 million means the club is hoping to turn a profit on a player acquired for €55 million. A longer contract gives Barcelona more leverage over potential buyers, since Koundé cannot walk away for free, meaning interested clubs must meet Barcelona’s asking price.

The BAR token connection

FC Barcelona has an official fan token, BAR, issued through its partnership with Chiliz on the Socios.com platform. The token trades on major exchanges with multi-million-dollar daily volumes, and its price currently sits around $0.27. BAR holders get voting rights on minor club decisions and access to engagement perks through the Socios ecosystem.

A successful transfer in the €60–80 million range would signal that Barcelona is managing its financial constraints proactively. If Barcelona cannot find a buyer at that price range and ends up either holding a disgruntled player or accepting a discount, it reinforces uncertainty around the club’s finances, which tends to weigh on BAR’s trading price.

What this means for investors

At $0.27, BAR is trading well below the highs it reached during periods of peak optimism around Barcelona’s on-field fortunes. If the Koundé sale goes through at the top end of the €60–80 million range, Barcelona gains financial flexibility, satisfies La Liga’s regulators, and projects an image of financial control. If Barcelona’s salary cap problems persist and force additional sales of key players, competitive performance could suffer, reducing fan engagement and token demand.
