FC Barcelona close to signing João Cancelo and Rodri in major transfer deals

FC Barcelona is closing in on two of the most consequential signings of the summer transfer window, reaching agreements to bring Portuguese full-back João Cancelo and Spanish midfielder Rodri to Camp Nou. The deals, which have been progressing through mid-August 2026, represent a bold statement from a club that not long ago was navigating serious financial turbulence.

Cancelo’s transfer is valued at approximately €10 million, while Barcelona has submitted multiple bids to Manchester City for Rodri, with the latest reported at around €70 million. Both players have reached personal terms with the club.

Two signings, two very different negotiations

The Cancelo deal is the more straightforward of the two. The defender previously spent time on loan at Barcelona after arriving in September 2023, where he became a key part of the backline. He subsequently moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, but a return to Catalonia has been in the works, and the relatively modest €10 million fee reflects both the player’s desire to come back and the nature of the transaction.

Rodri’s situation is significantly more complex, and significantly more expensive. The midfielder has reportedly expressed a personal preference to join Barcelona. Barcelona has submitted three separate bids to City, escalating to the latest figure of roughly €70 million. Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has publicly acknowledged the uncertainty, telling reporters that “anything can happen” as the transfer window approaches its deadline.

Combined, the two deals would cost Barcelona approximately €80 million.

Barcelona’s financial tightrope walk

Not long ago, Barcelona was the poster child for financial mismanagement in European football. The club activated multiple “economic levers,” selling off future revenue streams to stay afloat and comply with La Liga’s strict financial fair play regulations. Player registrations were delayed, wage bills were slashed.

Barcelona reportedly has additional targets beyond these two signings, with the club looking to further bolster the squad once the Cancelo and Rodri negotiations are formally completed. Whether the budget stretches that far depends on how efficiently these current deals close and what room remains under La Liga’s spending limits.
