Far Cry 2 “Remastered” Gameplay Is A Thing Of Beauty

3 weeks ago 28

First released back in 2008 as the second installment in Ubisoft's Far Cry series, Far Cry 2 took players to a fictional African country engulfed in a civil war. At the start of the game, players take on the role of a mercenary who is assigned to kill the Jackal, a weapons dealer inflaming the conflict. Set across a vast open-world, players will take on the main quest, as well as various side missions, with Far Cry 2 even including a multiplayer mode.

Praised for its setting, open-ended gameplay, world design, and visuals, Far Cry 2 was let down by its story, writing, and technical issues that plagued the game at launch. Yet, the game is remembered fondly almost two decades on, and is now celebrated for its ambition and sheer scale.

Since then, Ubisoft's Far Cry franchise has continued to grow, with the series now consisting of six mainline entries with its most recent, Far Cry 6, launching back in 2021. As such, many of the classic entries are yet to receive an official remake or remaster, meaning that fans have had to take matters into their own hands.

That is the case for Levan, who shared an unofficial remaster of Far Cry 2 back in 2022. However, the remastered mod itself comes from dannyhl2 on Nexus Mods. Far Cry 2 Remastered (New Dunia) was first uploaded back in 2020 and allows users to play the beloved Ubisoft game from start to finish with both enhanced and improved graphics and performance. That is exactly what YouTuber Levan did, and managed to play the entire main campaign for Far Cry 2 in just six hours and share the result of the enhanced version in real time.

In theory, 2008 is not too long ago, but in terms of technology and its advancements over recent years, it is a lifetime ago, and this mod manages to breathe new life into Far Cry 2 without removing its original atmosphere and visuals. It merely upgrades them, making the game a lot better suited to modern-day audiences.

The mod, which includes "bug fixes, gameplay and graphical enhancements", has racked up an impressive 20,000+ downloads on Nexus Mods, but it was over on Levan's YouTube video that fans gathered to share their thoughts on the impressive project.

"This looks absolutely amazing," one comment read. "The colors are so good and not dull and washed out like in the base game." Another user asked the important questions, "One million dollar question: Will there ever be a proper remaster of this game with FC3-style gameplay and cleared checkpoints? (And path-traced GFX?)"

Put simply, the fans are calling out for official remasters of the classic Far Cry entries, and with the Far Cry franchise being met with mixed reviews for its most recent entries, maybe this is the way for Ubisoft to earn back its dedicated fanbase.
