Mutant or ghoul? Or something else entirely?

We still don’t know when Fallout season 3 is expected to arrive, but what we do know is that the new season will have plenty of questions to answer. There’s the question of where it’ll be located — Utah, maybe? — and what that means for our major players like Ella Purnell’s Lucy MacLean. However, we’re more interested in the answer to one particular mystery surrounding Thaddeus, played to perfection by Johnny Pemberton.

Thaddeus has had a rough go of it in Fallout from the very beginning. For one thing, he began his arc as an unrepentant bully in the Brotherhood of Steel, one who seemed to enjoy tormenting other initiates. His relationship with Aaron Moten’s Maximus sours so severely that the two end up fighting, and Thaddeus’s foot is mangled in the process. The only thing that saves him from a painful death is a traveling merchant’s shady aerosol-based cure, which, unfortunately, transforms him into what he believes to be a ghoul. The Brotherhood of Steel hates ghouls, so he has no choice but to flee.

Fast-forward to season 2, and Thaddeus is displaying symptoms that go beyond what is possible for a normal ghoul. He’s losing limbs and growing extra mouths. All in all, it’s not looking good for Thaddeus.

Polygon got the chance to ask Pemberton about what he thought was happening with his character in Fallout season 3.

“There’s so much slinging around about it,” Pemberton tells Polygon. “I think that it's going to be open to interpretation because the Fallout world is just so big. There are so many things that can happen.”

Fans have been speculating on what Thaddeus will be revealed as in future seasons since the beginning of season 2. Some are convinced he’ll transform into a centaur, a mutant hybrid. Others believe it’s just the next step of him transforming into a super mutant, something fans only saw briefly in season 2.

Regardless, Fallout fans have a while to wait before they get a definitive answer — if they get one at all.

All episodes of Fallout seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Prime Video.
