Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Fallout season 2!While this season largely focused on the introduction of Justin Theroux's Robert House, Fallout season 2 saw a couple of actors from the games make surprising returns, and the creative team are breaking down one of them.
Developed and showrun by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, the Prime Video series has largely served as an original adaptation of the Bethesda game franchise, set within its world, while primarily focusing on separate characters. Fallout season 2, however, has started merging the worlds with the journey to New Vegas, featuring House as a key antagonist and introducing more of the factions from the games, namely Caesar's Legion.
Amid this merging came the surprise returns of Ron Perlman and Clancy Brown, marking the first game actors to land roles in the Fallout series. In anticipation of the season 2 finale, ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Jonah Nolan to discuss the show, during which the pair were asked about bringing Perlman, the narrator of every game going back to the original, into the show.
Both the showrunner and executive producer acknowledged Perlman as being "such an iconic part of the games" and confirmed that they had various conversations going back to season 1 about how he could appear. As Robertson-Dworet put it, "none of them felt like they were appropriately mythological as a character," while Nolan shared that the team "schemed and talked about how on earth we'd try to pay homage to that."
Ultimately, they landed on Perlman's casting as a mysterious Super Mutant who saves Walton Goggins' The Ghoul from having been impaled on the lightpost in Freeside and attempts to recruit him in the upcoming war against the Enclave. With his sole appearance coming in episode 6, "The Other Player," questions have abounded as to when he may be back, and while both Robertson-Dworet and Nolan were careful not to share too much, they did indicate the two-time Emmy nominee's time has only just begun:
Geneva Robertson-Dworet: We all felt like we wanted him to be sort of this Moses figure for his kind, who's leading them on a larger mission that we're maybe only seeing the beginnings of in this season. But obviously, it was a dream to work with him on this.
Jonah Nolan: We can't talk about the future, as we never talk about the future, because Geneva [Robertson-Dworet] will get very upset with us. [Chuckles] Maybe [he was a Super Mutant] — You only heard the voice. [Chuckles] You don't know whose voice that is, but there were a lot of conversations with Todd and Geneva and Graham [Wagner] figuring out if we could pull this off, and if it would feel like it was homaged in the right way.
Perlman has been a staple of the Fallout franchise going back to its 1997 inception, in which the future Hellboy star was both the narrator and Butch Harris, owner of the Far Go Traders, who players interact with at The Hub. While Butch didn't return in the follow-up games, Perlman did reprise his role as narrator for the subsequent sequels, as well as the since-decanonized spinoff Fallout Tactics.
He wasn't the only major game actor to return for Fallout season 2, either, as Clancy Brown appeared in episode 7 as the U.S. President, who meets with Walton Goggins' Cooper to acquire the cold fusion tech, as he believes it to be in the right hands. However, while not explicitly confirmed just yet, the show is heavily pointing to Brown's President being involved with Enclave, particularly after Cooper's arrest in the finale.
Though he may not have been seen beyond his episode 6 appearance, it does seem likely that Perlman's Super Mutant will play a bigger role come Fallout season 3. Beyond him being a major enough actor to not be cast for a single-episode cameo, his plans for taking the war to the Enclave will likely see him get involved once again with The Ghoul, as the season 2 ending pointed to the shadowy group being headquartered in Colorado, where Goggins' character is headed to find his family.

Fallout season 2 wraps up with huge reveals and major developments that hint at plenty more story to come in the future of the Fallout series.
It's also interesting to point out that Nolan clarifies Perlman may not just be a general Super Mutant in Fallout season 2. Many of the games have seen eloquent and intelligent Super Mutants, and the green-ish design of Perlman's character, along with the balled cages of gore around his hideout, certainly point to him being part of said race of people. However, with the Nightkin also donning a similar appearance to Perlman's, season 3 could reveal him to be part of the more elite group of Super Mutants.
