James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

Things really have been so quiet on the Fallout front for such a long time that it really was a bit of a surprise when Bethesda came out with their lengthy statement on current projects last week (July 17). In it, the developer confirmed that they have several projects under development, including remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, as well as the new collaboration with Obsidian Entertainment.

They also reaffirmed that Fallout 5 is also still very much on the table, though it is their "long-range destination," for the time being. In the meantime, there are plenty of forces acting outside the control of Bethesda themselves that could easily end up having a long-term effect on the franchise, and we just got an interesting update on one of the biggest.

In case you haven't really been keeping up with the business side of things, Xbox has a new head in Asha Sharma, who replaced longtime lead Phil Spencer earlier this year. She came in a with a raft of plans to get the company back on track, but one of the more controversial was the topic of exclusivity.

Sharma claimed she "heard" fans on their desire for more exclusives, and that quickly turned the conversation to Bethesda's releases, given that they are now a first-party studio. Now, in an interview with Windows Central (via PureXbox), the developer's director Todd Howard confirmed it's too early to discuss their plans for Fallout in that department.

Whilst it obviously isn't confirmation either way, it is interesting that he wasn't willing to go as far as ruling it out, particularly this early in the cycle. It will also be interesting to see what they do with the additional projects in production, including the new game being produced by Obsidian and the remasters of the old classics.

At the same time, the most pressing concern for Bethesda Game Studios remains The Elder Scrolls VI, which players still haven't seen any more of since the game's reveal in 2018 at E3.

Unfortunately for us dedicated Fallout fans, it does seem as though we're going to be waiting a very long time to play the sequel to 2015's Fallout 4. Hopefully the additional projects appear into the light of day sooner, though, so we can at least have some more adventures in the same universe while we wait for the next mainline game to fall into our laps.
