James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
It's no secret that Bethesda is taking its sweet time bringing us new Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, with over ten years and fifteen years since the last single-player games in those series, respectively. Todd Howard has confirmed that most of the studio is working on The Elder Scrolls VI right now, but that comes as scant consolation to fans of the post-apocalypse.
New Xbox head Asha Sharma wants Fallout to be a priority moving forward, but it's difficult to know what that really means, or if we'll get another single-player game any sooner as a result. Now, an update on another game in the franchise that is technically positive, has fans in a bit of a tailspin about the state of the IP as a whole.
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post detailing the next steps for Fallout 76, as teased by the leads working on the game. It details narrative expansions and a bunch more exciting features, all of which sound pretty good.
That said, there's a major portion of the community who simply don't want to play an MMO, and they are upset that resources which could be put into a new single-player Fallout experience are being diverted elsewhere.
"I know this game has an audience. And I know that people do genuinely like this game and play it. And I’m sure Bethesda makes a boatload of money off these players. But man, it just bums me out a single player fallout fans can’t get anything," one comment read.
"I love 76. I have over 500 hours in it. Can we please hear about a new game or remaster? I'm tired and now old, grandpa," another added.
"I like Fallout 76, but it's time to move on. The 76 team are experienced now and they could make a fantastic new single player Fallout game/spinoff," a third said.
Bethesda EntertainmentThere are obviously a lot of reasons to keep Fallout 76 going, but to do it at the expense of another game in the series really doesn't feel like a sensible business decision. We absolutely don't know that's the case, but there are certainly very gifted devs who are still working on the MMO, in lieu of a single-player game.
The Fallout franchise is in a remarkably good place right now, given how long it has been since a new release, and Bethesda has to get some new games to players to strike while the iron is hot.
