Twelve days after Nancy Guthrie -- the elderly mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie -- was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home, law enforcement officials and the Guthrie family continue to seek out information that will aid in their attempts to locate the 84-year-old and her abductor(s). However, media outlets continue to receive notes offering information about the kidnapping in exchange for bitcoin.
For the second time in as many days, TMZ received an email Thursday morning from a person claiming to know the identity of those who kidnapped Guthrie. The outlet received an email on Wednesday demanding the payment of 1 bitcoin in exchange for the name of the person responsible. As of this writing, no deposit has been made into the account provided.
Per TMZ, the person who sent the second note complained about "not being taken seriously." The outlet refrained from fully releasing all of the information contained in the note, in accordance with a request from law enforcement. However, it was noted that the sender made "ominous statements" and that payment was being sought so that they could "lay low" after identifying Guthrie's abductor out of fear of retaliation. The sender also reportedly stated that this would be their last attempt to help Guthrie's family and the police.
The value of 1 bitcoin as of late Thursday afternoon was just over $66,000 (per CoinDesk).
The Pima County Sheriff's Department announced in a statement Thursday (via People) that several items of evidence had been recovered by investigators, including gloves. Meanwhile, the FBI upped its reward offer to $100,000 for information leading to Guthrie's recovery and/or the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her kidnapping.
Additionally, the FBI provided identifying information about the masked suspect seen in a series of images published by the bureau on Feb. 10. The suspect is described as a "male, approximately 5’9” - 5’10” tall, with an average build," per an official Facebook statement. It was further noted that the suspect was wearing a "black, 25-liter 'Ozark Trail Hiker Pack' backpack" in the aforementioned footage.
Police detained an individual following a Tuesday traffic stop and later questioned them in relation to the Guthrie case, but that person was later released.
Nancy Guthrie is reportedly in fragile health, requiring a pacemaker and daily medication to manage a heart condition, as reported by NewsNation. Her pacemaker data ceased syncing with her Apple devices at 2:28 a.m. on the day of her abduction.
