There are plenty of upcoming DC movies still to come in 2025 and beyond, with a wide array of films being in various stages of development at the newly-established DC Studios. Fundamentally, 2024 represented a new beginning for DC's on-screen installments, as the stage began to be properly set for the start of James Gunn's rebirth with 2025's Superman. Alongside that, of course, is the Batman annex Matt Reeves is handling with the upcoming The Batman Part II and the recently released Joker: Folie à Deux.

2023's DC movie slate closed out the DCEU movie timeline with James Gunn's new DCU stretching out in front of us. For 2024's live-action DC movie slate, only Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux was set in stone, but 2025 onwards will see Gunn and Safran's vision realized, as Superman kick-starts the new DCU alongside several projects already announced to revitalize the subsequent shared universe.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill's departure from the role, honoring the character's roots as "the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way."

Release Date July 11, 2025

Cast David Corenswet , Rachel Brosnahan , María Gabriela De Faría , Edi Gathegi , Nicholas Hoult , Frank Grillo , Nathan Fillion , Milly Alcock , Sara Sampaio , Pruitt Taylor Vince , Skyler Gisondo , Anthony Carrigan , Wendell Pierce , Beck Bennett , Sean Gunn

After Creature Commandos kick-starts James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe on the small screen, the upcoming Superman DCU movie is set to be the new franchise's first feature film. Scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, Superman will replace Henry Cavill's DCEU Man of Steel with David Corenswet, introducing a new Superman for the rebooted DCU.

Crucially, Superman will not be a retelling of Superman's origin story. This may go some way to explaining why the movie's title was changed from the original Superman: Legacy to simply Superman, as instead, this installment will focus on Clark Kent balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his Kansas upbringing, already working as a reporter for the Daily Planet, and already having met main characters such as Lois Lane. The film was written and directed by Gunn himself.

Alongside David Corenswet's new Man of Steel, the Superman DCU movie cast will be headed by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, after her breakout performance in The Marvelous Ms. Maisel. James Gunn promised that his new Superman would arrive in a world already populated by superheroes, and delivered immediately with Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion playing Guy Gardner), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) all in Superman.

On December 19, 2025, DC Studios released the first official teaser trailer for Superman, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming DCU movie. The trailer was met with positive reception, and James Gunn confirmed it was the most viewed and talked-about trailer in history for both DC and WB, a good sign that there is a lot of anticipation for this new iteration of the iconic superhero.

What particularly stands out in the trailer, is its willingness to show Superman beaten down and broken, eventually whistling to Krypto the Superdog to help get him home, the biggest (and cutest) standout in the trailer. Glimpses of Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Metamorpho are shown throughout. Alongside David Corenswet's Clark Kent and Superman, the trailer hints at his relationship with Lois Lane, and highlights the hatred Lex Luthor has for the Big Blue Boy Scout. It's a strong start to Superman's marketing campaign.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is one of many DC movies being released by Warner Bros. under the supervision of DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was officially confirmed in January 2023 alongside other DC titles, including Superman: Legacy, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Swamp Thing.

Director Craig Gillespie

Release Date June 26, 2026

Writers Tom King , Otto Binder , Ana Nogueira

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was also announced by James Gunn in January 2023, with the release date of July 26, 2026, later confirmed alongside director Craig Gillespie. In stark contrast to Superman, Supergirl was raised on Krypton and witnessed horrific events for fourteen years before making her way to Earth. Gunn has promised a very different take on Supergirl, making her a much more formidable force than previous iterations of the character. Supergirl's DCU casting was confirmed in January 2024, with House of The Dragon's Milly Alcock taking up the role of Kara Zor-El.

Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow: Plot Details & Everything We Know

Along with many other DCU projects, James Gunn announced the exciting Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, shedding light on the franchise's future.

The Craig Gillespie-directed, Milly Alcock-starring adaptation of Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Bilquis Evely illustrated, is the second feature title under the new DC Studios run by James Gunn and Peter Safran after the former’s Superman movie which hits theaters on July 11, 2025. Ana Nogueira adapted the comic book for the big screen.

Gunn's rundown of the movie went like this:

“We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

In a pitch-perfect casting decision, Jason Momoa has been confirmed to be playing Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a role he wanted for years. Given that Lobo doesn't play a role in the graphic novel the film is adapting, how exactly he fits into the story is yet to be revealed, but given how big of a name Momoa is, it's likely he will be playing Lobo in other DCU projects. While it seemed likely, Momoa playing Lobo pretty much confirms that he will be done with Aquaman, leaving that iteration of the character in the DCEU.

3 Clayface - September 11, 2026

Main DC Universe Timeline

Clayface in Creature Commandos Episode 5

In what is one of the more "out there" projects for DC Studios, it was announced that a Clayface movie would be released on September 11, 2026, and would be set in the mainline DCU. While not a ton is known about the film in terms of story or where it will fit into the timeline, prolific horror director and writer, Mike Flanagan wrote the script, after pitching the film to DC Studios. It is unclear if Flanagan will direct it, but if so, Clayface could be something special.

The Batman side of the DCU is beginning to get built out slowly, with a glimpse of the Caped Crusader in Circe's vision during Creature Commandos, and Clayface himself appearing in the series. Clayface will be a lower-budget horror film which is right in Mike Flanagan's wheelhouse, and rumors that it will be inspired by The Fly bodes well for a body horror film that is unlike anything else in either the MCU or the DCU. Alan Tudyk voiced the character for Creature Commandos, so it is possible he could reprise the role in the film.

4 The Batman Part II - October 1, 2027

DC Elseworlds Project

Your changes have been saved

The Batman Part II is the sequel to Matt Reeve's The Batman, released in 2022, and will continue where the original film left off. The film shares a universe with the HBO Max original Penguin series and sees the return of the Riddler and a different incarnation of the Joker.

Release Date October 1, 2027

Matt Reeves' The Batman was intended to kick-start a new trilogy of standalone DC projects focused on the Caped Crusader, so the confirmation of a sequel was inevitable. The Batman Part II is set for release on October 1, 2027, having been moved back a year from its prior October 2, 2026 release date. The movie will be a DC Elseworlds project, continuing the story of the 2022 original and The Penguin, which premiered in September 2024.

Robert Pattinson will reprise his role of Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, though not much else is known about the film. Current speculation suggests The Batman Part II could adapt DC Comics' No Man's Land storyline, which sees Gotham City become a battlefield in the wake of a catastrophic earthquake. Reeves has also teased that the storyline will further explore the corruption at the heart of Gotham City:

We've shared [the script] as we've been going along with DC, and they're super excited. It's going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn't even anticipate in the first one.

The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie & it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.

With The Batman Part II's script close to being finished, it looks like the film will begin shooting sometime in 2025, giving it plenty of time to make its newly revealed release date, five years after The Batman made its way to theaters. With Colin Farrell returning as Oz Cobb in the sequel, it's likely at least part of The Batman Part II will grapple with the events of The Penguin.

5 Dynamic Duo - June 30, 2028

Universe TBD

Red Hood looks menacing in front of a sepia image of Nightwing.

Dynamic Duo was announced in the fall of 2024. Instead of following Batman and Robin, this animated film will follow two of the most iconic Robins, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, as they try to navigate their very different futures. After being Robin, Dick Grayson eventually became Nightwing, while Jason Todd turned into the Red Hood following his death at the hands of the Joker. No details about when the story will take place in their lives have been confirmed, but it could be before they find their own paths.

Coco writer Matthew Aldrich is writing the film, while Swaybox Studios will handle animation. Swaybox is fairly new to the scene, and uses a mix of puppetry, live-action, stop-motion, and CGI to make their projects come to life. Dynamic Duo following in the same vein could make the project stand out compared to most comic book adaptations. Swaybox co-founder Arthur Mintz is directing the film, and it is produced by DC Studios co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn. Dynamic Duo will be released in theaters on June 30, 2028.

6 Sgt. Rock - TBA

Main DC Universe Timeline

GI Robot andn Sgt. Rock in Creature Commandos Episode 3

Rumors of a Sgt. Rock movie have been swirling around DC for years, but it seems like there is actually momentum building for the DCU film, given that Deadline announced that Daniel Craig and director Luca Guadagnino are currently positioning themselves for a Sgt. Rock movie that would be set in the mainline DC Universe. It's unclear if Daniel Craig will be playing the titular character, or someone else entirely, but he likely will be.

This is especially interesting given that Sgt. Rock and the rest of the boys from Easy Company made their official DCU debut in Creature Commandos, episode 3, "Cheers to the Tin Man." With James Gunn saying the DCU will work more like Star Wars instead of the MCU, films not directly tied to the main story, or even in timeline order, could still be made, which is perfect for a film like Sgt. Rock, which should be placed in WWII. G.I. Robot could also come back to the DCU for the film, solidifying its Creature Commandos connection.

Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios (AKA Clash Of Empires) provides a fresh take on the Dark Knight's lore based in the Aztec Empire, following the story of Yohualli Coatl as he takes on the Spanish Conquistadors after they murder his parents. While the first official image for the animated Batman movie has been revealed, its release date is currently unknown.

Batman has seen many wonderful reimaginings, with iterations being steampunk geniuses, trapped in Lovecraftian versions of Gotham, and occasionally becoming a cyborg - so Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios is set to follow in one of DC's most iconic traditions even as it fleshes out exciting new lore. The movie is set to release on Max, allowing audiences to experience more adventures of the Caped Crusader outside the release of The Batman - Part II in 2025 and The Brave And The Bold.

8 The Authority - TBA

Main DC Universe Timeline

The Authority Members Fly Up Into The Sky

The Authority was announced by James Gunn on January 31, 2023, and while it doesn't yet have an attached release date, the film will be part of the DCU's Chapter 1, titled Gods and Monsters. The Authority is a very different type of superhero team for DC, as they often go to extreme methods to get the job done, so The Authority is expected to take inspiration from Amazon Prime Video's The Boys.

Though no writer or director has yet been attached, Gunn did confirm that the team would have connections to the DCU's new Superman, who's set to debut in 2025's Superman. Maria De Faria's Engineer will debut in Superman, setting up her wider role in the DCU and presumably a key part in The Authority.

9 The Brave And The Bold - TBA

Main DC Universe Timeline

Batman and Robin in the DC Comics written by Grant Morrison

Your changes have been saved

The Brave and the Bold is the first Batman movie in James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, which reboots the Dark Knight after Ben Affleck's take on the character. It introduces Bruce Wayne's son, the Robin Damian Wayne, and draws inspiration from Grant Morrison's work on the comic book character.

The Brave and the Bold is set to reboot the Dark Knight again for the DCU, placing a new actor in the role of Bruce Wayne, separate from Robert Pattinson's iteration. While there's no current release date set, The Brave and the Bold will introduce Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne's estranged son, to the DCU as a version of Robin.

The film will be based on Grant Morrison's 2006-2013 run of Batman in DC Comics, but there hasn't been much more news about the development of the project since Gunn's initial January 2023 announcement. The Flash's Andy Muschietti is attached to direct the upcoming Batman reboot, but a timeline is unclear. THR recently noted that "while they are developing a Batman movie called The Brave and the Bold at DC Studios, the duo have not yet committed to their next feature."

The DCU's Next Justice League Replacement Needs 2 Teams (& I Can't Pick Which One I Want More)

The new DCU already has the perfect team to replace the Justice League, but I think there should be two versions of the DC squad, and both are great.

With The Brave and the Bold set to introduce Damien Wayne into live action for the first time, it is reasonable to assume he will also be featured in Teen Titans. Another possible character that could appear is Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle, who was brought over from the previous DCEU. Teen Titans is a strong move for the DCU that could appeal to multiple generations of fans.

11 Bane & Deathstroke - TBA

Universe TBD

Tom Hardy as Bane and Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke Custom image by Andy Behbakht

DC has a storied history of making movies and TV shows about the most infamous comic book villains. The Suicide Squad has two movies, the Joker has two starring Joaquin Phoenix, of course, and both Harley Quinn and The Penguin have their own TV shows. According to reports from THR in late September 2024, the next such project will be Bane & Deathstroke.

Most recently played by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises and Joe Mangianello in the DCEU, the villains will headline a DC Studios movie written by Matthew Orton (Captain America: Brave New World). No director is attached to the project yet, and casting has not been confirmed.

12 Swamp Thing - TBA

Main DC Universe Timeline

Swamp Thing (DCU)

DC's first real horror movie, Swamp Thing is part of the Gods and Monsters chapter of the new DC franchise. It will be directed by James Magold who has promised a Gothic-inspired stand-alone.

Studio(s) DC Entertainment , Warner Bros. Discovery , Warner Bros.

Swamp Thing is expected to be an honest-to-goodness horror film for the DCU, exploring the dark origins of the mysterious Swamp Thing, based on Alan Moore's 1984 The Saga of the Swamp Thing storyline from DC Comics. James Mangold, who had previously expressed interest in working with Gunn and Safran in the DCU, was quickly attached to the project as writer and director.

Despite being darker, Swamp Thing will still be connected to the rest of the DCU, proving that Gunn and Safran aren't afraid to play with genre in the development of their new franchise. Mangold has offered a little of what DC fans can expect from the new movie:

"While I’m sure DC views ‘Swamp Thing’ as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster... Just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone."

DC Elseworlds Sequel

In a shock few people saw coming, a belated sequel to Keanu Reeves' Constantine was announced in 2022, with Reeves set to return as John Constantine. The original movie came out in 2005, and though not widely well-received earned cult status. Interest in the character has remained, and as Reeves himself said to Stephen Colbert: “The no’s started to become a maybe which became a kinda yes… and right now waiting on a script.”

More recently, Constantine 2 writer Akiva Goldsman told Collider that he hopes to have the movie's script ready soon. Little is known about the project beyond that, other than the fact that it was once considered to be a TV show.

Franchise(s) Joker

2019's Joker was one of DC's biggest success stories, reaching critical acclaim and earning a number of accolades, including two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. Though initially conceptualized as a standalone feature, a sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux was released on October 4, 2024, DC's only live-action movie release of the year.

Todd Phillips' Joker franchise takes place in DC's Elseworlds, so it isn't affected by the reset of the main DC Universe, meaning a completely fresh story can unfold. Joaquin Phoenix reprised his role of Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. Joker, while Zazie Beetz briefly returned after her role in the first film. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Harry Lawtey (playing this universe's Harvey Dent) all played significant roles. Lady Gaga was also introduced in Joker: Folie à Deux as Harley "Lee" Quinn, a new take on the character who is a fellow Arkham inmate and devotee to the Joker.

Joker: Folie à Deux was received rather poorly following its release. The film sits at a 33% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score is even worse at 31%. It was the first ever comic book movie to receive a D on CinemaScore, and is set to lose money at the box-office after the first film made over $1 billion.

Every Other DC Movie In Development

lobo in dcu

Prior to the creation of DC Studios in November 2022, several other projects had been in development. While some of these might never come to fruition, others could easily be folded into James Gunn's new DC Universe or be produced as DC Elseworlds projects akin to The Batman and Joker franchises. Potential DC projects seem to come and go, some only forming as rumors and others being canceled only a few months before their supposed release, such as Batgirl.

Here are all the heavily rumored upcoming DC movies whose productions have significant question marks, but which have either been reported by reputable industry sources or confirmed by associated talent as still being in active development:

  • Black Canary was announced to be in development in August 2021 after the release of Birds of Prey. The Max-exclusive film would see Jurnee Smollett reprise her role of Dinah Lance, a.k.a. Black Canary. In June 2022, Smollett revealed the film was still in development.
  • Lobo has been in development since 2009, though has never come to fruition, and has passed through a variety of directors, including Guy Ritchie, Brad Peyton, and Michael Bay. With Jason Momoa cast as the character, it's possible this project could get off the ground.
  • The Metal Men, much like Lobo, has been in development at DC for a long time, first being announced in 2007 with Barry Sonnenfeld attached as director. In 2022, Gunn and Safran confirmed they had plans for the team in the DCU's future, despite its remarkably long development. Creature Commandos hinted at their place in the DCU.
  • Static Shock was originally announced in 2020, with Michael B. Jordan attached as a producer. Randy McKinnon was brought on to rewrite the script, but the current status of Virgil Hawkins' big-screen debut is unclear.
  • Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Superman was announced in 2021, putting a Black version of the Man of Steel front-and-center with Coates as writer and J.J. Abrams attached as a producer. Should this DC movie still be produced by DC Studios, it would be an Elseworlds project rather than part of the main DCU continuity.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
