Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Yoshi, and possibly even Rosalina are sure to have some difficult challenges ahead in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is confirmed to feature a host of memorable villains from the Super Mario franchise. This time, they'll be up against the villain of the previous film, his son, some forgotten foes from a 1988 video game, and more.

Following their defeat in The Super Mario Bros. Movie's ending, both Bowser and Kamek are slated to return. They'll once again be supported by their army of Goombas, Koopas, and a legion of other classic Super Mario minions.

The main characters will have to get past all of them once again, not to mention an assortment of new faces to the movie series, many with histories as bosses in Mario and Luigi's video games.

6 Bowser Jr.

Bowser Jr in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Chief among the new villains in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is, of course, Bowser Jr. After his video game debut as the main villain of Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser Jr. quickly became a fixture of the franchise, regularly appearing as both a boss in story-based games and a playable character in adjacent titles, like the Mario Party and Super Smash Bros. series.

With all that in mind, Bowser Jr. was one of the most popular choices for the villain of The Super Mario Bros. sequel, and it looks like the film is indeed poised to take the course. The marketing has revealed that Bowser Jr. will spearhead Bowser's rescue, effectively launching Mario and company's cosmic adventure.

Although typically not as powerful as his father, Bowser Jr. is shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with, thanks in large part to the weapon he carried in Super Mario Sunshine. The villain has been spotted with the Magic Paintbrush, which he used to spread "goop" all over Delfino Square.

From the looks of things, he'll be using the paintbrush to create goop constructs (like a Pirahna Plant) and give himself new transformations, including "Wonder Bowser Jr." and what seems to be "Fury Bowser Jr."

5 Megaleg

The Megaleg confronts Rosalina in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The giant, three-legged robot in the footage from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a Megaleg, one of the bosses that Mario has to take down in Super Mario Galaxy. In the game, it was under the control of Bowser Jr., who is expected to be the one behind its destructive rampage in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie as well.

Judging by the trailers, this interpretation of Megaleg won't be controlled remotely, and will instead require a pilot. Presumably, Yoshi will try to wrest control over a Megaleg at some point in the story after turning Kamek into an egg. Rosalina will also get an opportunity to test her power on the giant robot.

4 Birdo

Birdo jumping through the air in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Today, the pink dinosaur known as Birdo isn't really thought of as a villain in Mario and Luigi's world, due largely to friendly appearances in games like Mario Tennis. But Birdo's role has evolved greatly since she first burst onto the scene in Super Mario Bros. 2. She served as a recurring boss in the 1988 game, where she also had red and gray variants.

If The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailers are any indication, the film's take on Birdo will be closer to her original role. It's known that she'll be engaging in a fight with Princess Peach, utilizing her signature move, which is shooting eggs out of her mouth. For the time being, it's unclear if Birdo will have any voice lines or if the film will open the door for her to be on good terms with the main characters later.

3 Clawgrip

Spotted in the background in the same sequence where Princess Peach fights Birdo is a large crab turned over on its back. Not to be confused with the Sidesteppers in Mario games, which are just minions, Clawgrip is a full-fledged boss, having filled that role in Super Mario Bros. 2.

In the game, Clawgrip employs his massive pincers to throw boulders at Mario, who has to redirect them at his opponent in order to defeat the creature. Remarkably, this was the first and last time that Mario had to do battle with Clawgrip in a video game, which makes his appearance here rather notable.

While his return is welcome, it remains to be seen if Clawgrip will be anything more than an Easter egg. But since he is on hand, there's a good chance he'll at least get to utilize his abilities from Super Mario Bros. 2, even if the threat he poses is quickly taken care of.

2 Mouser

Peach and Mouser in Super Mario Galaxy Movie

When Princess Peach holds up her umbrella during the same fight that features Clawgrip and Birdo, a mouse-like creature with sunglasses leans toward her. This character can be identified as Mouser, whom, like Clawgrip, hasn't clashed with Mario since Super Mario Bros. 2's release in 1988.

A villain that Mario and the others have to overcome three times over the course of the NES classic, Mouser combats the heroes by throwing bombs. Similar to how the fight with Clawgrip goes, he has to be defeated with his own weapon of choice. Throwing the bombs back at him is ultimately what brings Mouser down in each battle.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has revealed very little of what to expect from Mouser, but it would be surprising if the key element of the Mouser boss fights in Super Mario Bros. 2 isn't incorporated. Bob-ombs, or perhaps a different explosive in the Super Mario series, will most likely find itself hurled at Princess Peach or Toad during the upcoming casino battle.

1 Wart

It's no coincidence that Mouser, Clawgrip, and Birdo - all bosses from Super Mario Bros. 2 - are grouped together in one sequence in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The collective presence of the three made it clear that the goings-on in the casino are inspired by the 1988 game, which led to theories that its villain would be at the center of this particular arc.

Those assertions were proven true when The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially revealed Wart, the toad-like creature wearing a crown in the film's final trailer. Wart served as the main and final boss of Super Mario Bros. 2, which saw Mario and his friends go on an adventure in Subcon, a dream world that Wart had conquered with his Dream Machine.

As for where he fits into the picture in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it looks like the film will take inspiration from various parts of Super Mario Bros. 2 to create a casino filled with its characters, who will come to blows with Princess Peach and Toad for one reason or another. Similar to how it was in the game, Wart appears to be the leader of the villains assembled here.

Because the events of Super Mario Bros. 2 took place within a dream Mario had, Wart and many of the characters in the game occupy an interesting place in the lore, as that means there's not really any evidence that they exist in the franchise's canon. Some, like Birdo, made subsequent appearances, but Wart was abandoned for decades.

The long absence of a character who was the main villain of a popular installment in the Super Mario series makes his impending big-screen debut a massive moment both for the character and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It's worth wondering if fan reception to Wart will have any impact on the future of his video game counterpart.
