Demon Slayer's Hashira are the most elite warriors the Demon Slayer Corps has to offer, but detaching the weapon from the fighter can be a tall order. In Demon Slayer, weaponry is treated as an extension of the character; it mirrors a character's personality and combat style to an incredible degree. Plenty of proverbial ink has already been spilled ranking Demon Slayer's Hashira, but that also innately takes their weapons into account. Stripping that away is next to impossible.

It's still worthwhile to try, though, if only because it can show the incredible diversity of the franchise's combat styles and techniques — not to mention how tight its characterization is. Furthermore, a handful of Hashira have what are, really, fairly basic Nichiri katana. In those cases, the determination will come down to their overall plot impact. Every sword in Demon Slayer tells a story, and for its Hashira, their swords are their stories as much as anything else.

9 Shinobu Kocho

Although she's often considered to be Demon Slayer's weakest Hashira, Shinobu's sword is a perfect example of Demon Slayer's intricate characterization. Physically weak and fueled by vengeance over her sister's death to Doma, Shinobu would take the high road to becoming a Hashira. Accepting her physical inability to decapitate demons, she instead chose to develop an encyclopedic knowledge of medicine and poisons and focused her combat prowess on rapid piercing movements that can deliver them.

Her katana, built for piercing and stabbing, mirrors that; it's long and thin with a needle-like protrusion at the end, meant for rapid maneuvering that echoes her Insect Breathing's emphasis on rapid movement, piercing, and disorientation. Unfortunately, her katana would be much less effective in somebody else's hands: without her hyper-specific knowledge of poisons and her personal Breathing Style catered to their delivery, it lacks effectiveness compared to other Hashira's katanas which, although often individually tailored, also offer adaptability and versatility.

8 Muichiro Tokito

demon slayer muichiro tokito

Muichiro is a particularly interesting case because he starts off the trend of fairly conventional Nichirin swords in the hands of exceptional swordspeople. The average nature of his katana is actually a pretty fantastic complement to the real star of the show: his Mist Breathing Style. Muichiro himself is exceptionally overpowered (as are all Hashira), relying on deception and misdirection in combat above other things. It's worth mentioning, after all, that both Obanai and Sanemi—universally considered stronger Hashira—had trouble landing a hit on him while sparring during the Hashira Training arc.

That's to say that, while Muichiro's skill itself does a lot of the heavy lifting, his sword isn't particularly special. It really doesn't need to be anything more than it is for him to be exceptionally strong in his own right. It's precisely the simplicity of his sword that allows his swordsmanship and combat prowess to shine.

7 Kyojuro Rengoku

A similar case applies to Rengoku: really, his katana isn't anything all that special. Although it might be stunning, Rengoku's katana is basically a standard Nichirin sword without any special frills. Like with Muichiro, his sword's expression is all due to his own skill and temperament.

For a character like Rengoku, that's especially important, and it speaks to Demon Slayer's ability to characterize via weapons once again. Rengoku's encounter with Akaza during the Mugen Train arc was the first major clash that viewers would ever see with an Upper Moon.

The emotional impact of the arc is emphasized by Rengoku's unique strengths as a Hashira: his indomitable will and his raw physical power. It was critical that viewers wouldn't be overwhelmed with new mechanics at that point, so that the broader emotional themes (and the strength of Rengoku's character) didn't fall to the wayside. It's Rengoku that carries a fight that many other Hashira likely would have struggled with—his sword is strong, but the heavy lifting is done by the fact it's in Rengoku's hands.

6 Giyu Tomioka

If anything can be said about Giyu's sword, it's that it's the perfect complement to his combat style. As a virtuosic Water Breathing Style user, Giyu rules the court in terms of overall balance. Defensive, offensive, and evasive maneuvers are all well within his wheelhouse. Where Rengoku's swordsmanship was defined by his raw offensive power, Giyu's swordsmanship (and consequently, his sword) is much more defined by his high adaptability.

In that sense, Rengoku and Giyu could be considered in the same ballpark, but with very different aims in terms of what they're trying to get out of their sword. Giyu's incredibly balanced, whereas Rengoku is focused on offensive capability. The actual weapons they're using, at the end of the day, are pretty much the same. Again, Demon Slayer uses simplicity to draw out the differences between the fighting styles of two highly effective Hashira: the fact their swords are basically the same is precisely what allows the approach and tactics of either to shine.

5 Obanai Iguro

Obanai's sword is thematically intertwined with his character down to the very core. In line with his Serpent Breathing, Obanai's katana has a flexible, snake-like structure that gives him ample room to maneuver. Obanai is notable because, after Shinobu, he's the first Hashira mentioned to really have specially adapted hardware tailored to certain situations. Again, special hardware doesn't necessarily make the weapon better — but it certainly can make it more versatile or powerful in ways more conventional blades can't match.

Although his unique weapon is clearly built to synergize with his Serpent Breathing and approach to combat, it offers an obvious perk above more traditional katanas on this list by virtue of its flexibility. It can open up brand-new angles of attack and play a crucial part in outwitting enemies, offering it a tactical advantage that stands tall over many of the lower-ranked Nichirin weapons when taken on its own merits.

4 Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi's iconic katana is actually fairly straightforward. The reason it deserves a ranking so high is less about what it can do, and a lot more about what it has done. Like the other cases, much of Sanemi's combat prowess comes down to his extreme aggression and utter mastery of Wind Breathing.

However, while it's not mechanically unique like the higher ranked weapons, Sanemi's sword represents the pinnacle of the essential no-frills Nichirin katana: capable of augmenting the most skilled of wielders, durable enough to stand up to the likes of Kokushibo and Muzan, aggressive enough to dominate in the most dire of circumstances, and versatile enough to provide a supporting role when the pure-power players come out.

3 Mitsuri Kanroji

demon slayer mitsuri kanroji

Mitsuri's sword is a lot more like a whip than a katana. That's a blessing and a curse. It has a high mechanical floor for use, not to mention being incredibly physically demanding. But for those who are actually able to use it to its fullest potential, it would be an unbelievable asset. That's the thing which separates it from the straightforward katana of a stronger Hashira like, say, Sanemi; it's also what makes it different from Shinobu's particularly specialized katana.

It just so happens that, because of Mitsuri's unique physiology and Love Breathing Style, she's the only one who can make the most of this design. However, her sword itself is deeply versatile and, in certain situations, an adaptable weapon that can do things no other weapon could. It opens up the possibility for misdirection, unexpected angles of attack, and combat that flows while remaining threatening at all points.

2 Tengen Uzui

demon slayer tengen uzui

Tengen wields something very similar to a set of nunchuks: two massive swords connected by a chain. It's a novel concept, and it does synergize perfectly with his overall fighting style. Tengen always made things look easy with his Sound Breathing abilities and extreme speed. His ability to read his enemies' movements over time almost makes him feel overpowered, and his dual cleavers make open the opportunity for him to manipulate momentum, fake out opponents, and dominate fights.

Mechanically speaking, though, his dual cleavers are a worthy weapon all on their own. Mastery of them would mean extended range, deadly precision, and the possibility for unpredictable angles of attack. Tengen's dual cleavers align perfectly with his rhythmic combat style precisely because, by design, they turn battle into a game of timing — and all space in the wielder's range into a threat.

1 Gyomei Himejima

demon slayer gyomei himejima

Gyomei is, hands down, Demon Slayer's strongest Hashira. With any loadout, he'd be an oppressive force with his extreme agility, unparalleled physical strength, and absurd understanding of the battlefield. But his full potential is brought out by his weapons: an axe and flail connected by a chain, both scaled to match his massive size. Even Kokushibo had to admit that Gyomei's weapons were singularly oppressive.

Similar to Tengen's dual cleavers, two distinctly powerful weapons conjoined by a chain opens up far more strategic possibilities than a standard katana. The sheer combat versatility this setup allows is unmatched. At range, it's perfect for zoning enemies and controlling their movements, while its massive destructive power at close range makes other Nichirin weapons pale in comparison.

When used to its optimal potential, Gyomei's Nichirin gear is practically as good as it gets when it comes to sheer power, combat versatility, and tactical possibilities. Above all, it's the greatest example of how, for Demon Slayer, fighters and their weapons are always written into one another.
