The Magnificent Seven is now a worldwide hit on Netflix. Starring Ethan Hawke, among others, the 2016 Western is a remake of the 1960 film of the same name, which itself was a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954). As early as January 19, the recent remake started quickly climbing Netflix's global charts.
Now, The Magnificent Seven (2016) ranks sixth on Netflix's Global Top 10 movies for the week of January 19–25 with 6.5 million views and 14.5 million hours viewed. It ranks below The Rip at No. 1, Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart, No Time to Die, People We Meet on Vacation, KPop Demon Hunters, and above Spectre, Max, Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story, and Freelance in 10th place.
This week, The Magnificent Seven is a Top 10 movie in 36 countries across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Though it isn't available on Netflix in the United States, The Magnificent Seven (2016) is streaming on MGM+.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, with a script written by Nic Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk, The Magnificent Seven (2016) stars Ethan Hawke as one of seven gunmen from different walks of life who are recruited by a determined young widow to defend her town against the ruthless private militia of a powerful industrialist.
The cast also includes Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier as the Seven, alongside Peter Sarsgaard, Haley Bennett, Luke Grimes, Matt Bomer, Jonathan Joss, Cam Gigandet, Sean Bridgers, Billy Slaugther, Mark Ashworth, and William Lee Scott.
The Magnificent Seven received mixed reviews, resulting in a 64% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics claiming that the Western works as a reasonably entertaining action thriller, though it falls short of the greatness promised by its title and the classics that inspired it.
The movie also has a 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and was a moderate box office success, grossing $162.4 million worldwide against its $90–107 million budget.
The Magnificent Seven is just one of several recent streaming success stories for Ethan Hawke, whose FX series The Lowdown has been a global streaming hit on Disney+/Hulu and his new horror sequel Black Phone 2 has been dominating Peacock's Top 10 movies in the United States for the past 10 days.
