Ryan Northrup is a Senior Staff Writer on ScreenRant's Movie & TV News team, where he has authored nearly 5,000 articles, including features and reviews. A graduate of McMaster University, Ryan began his career in public relations before attending Vancouver Film School. There, he built lasting industry connections and optioned a feature film screenplay.

The Weight is headed to theaters.

Following the film's premiere, Vertical now announces that it has picked up the North American distribution rights to The Weight and has set a wide theatrical release for September 18. McKinley shared the following enthusiastic statement about the acquisition:

The Weight is the result of a truly special collaboration between an exceptional cast, led by Ethan and Russell, and my partners at Fields Entertainment, augenschein, Under the Influence, and Construction Films. Seeing the film connect with and energize audiences at Sundance and Berlinale has been incredibly rewarding, and has only amplified my excitement to partner up with Vertical to bring this kind of big-screen, throwback experience to theaters in September.”

Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey also released a statement to accompany the news, noting the strong performances from Hawke and Crowe and the power of the film's script and sensibilities:

“Anchored by powerhouse performances from Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, The Weight is a smart, character-driven thriller that captures the tension and sophistication of the great 1970s classics while feeling sharp and contemporary for today’s audiences. We’re thrilled to once again work with augenschein Filmproduktion and to partner with Padraic, Simon, Ethan, Nathan, and Ryan to bring this elevated story to the big screen.”

The film's synopsis, included below, teases a powerful story involving a father attempting to get back to his daughter by smuggling gold across dangerous terrain alongside some untrustworthy companions:

When Samuel (Hawke) is torn from his daughter and sent to a brutal prison, Warden Clancy (Crowe) offers a high-stakes proposition: smuggle gold out of a remote mine with a dangerous crew of prisoners and he’ll win his freedom. But as the group journeys into the unforgiving wilderness, the real threat isn’t the terrain – it’s the betrayal and violence festering within their ranks. Surrounded by greed, suspicion, and danger, Samuel must risk everything to reunite with his child.

The Weight landing a North American distributor and theatrical release date follows a buzzy premiere at Sundance and an additional screening at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival. Critics' praised the film's old-school adventure charms and Hawke's compelling lead performance, with positive reviews earning the film a glowing 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Russell Crowe looking serious in The Weight

For Hawke, The Weight's acquisition follows a Best Actor nomination for his performance in Blue Moon (2025) at this year's Academy Awards, a category that ultimately went to Michael B. Jordan for Ryan Coogler's acclaimed Sinners (2025). Hawke also recently starred in Black Phone 2 (2025) and She Dances (2025), and leads his own FX series with The Lowdown.

Crowe remains similarly busy as an actor, recently starring in Nuremberg (2025), a World War II drama. In 2024, Crowe was also seen in Kraven the Hunter (2024) and The Exorcism (2024).

The Weight marks McKinley's feature film directorial debut after earning directing credits on shows like Kingdom, Fightworld, and Debris. McKinley also has some previous experience with both Hawke and Crowe, having executive produced Hawke's The Good Lord Bird and the Crowe-starring The Exorcism.

It will be a few months before the audience response to The Weight can be assessed, but the strong reviews bode well for the film's theatrical release. Though the international distribution rights remain up for grabs, it may just be a matter of time before McKinley's film secures a theatrical release in markets outside of North America.
